A Research presentation on Korean
Christian History and Culture Centre
The NCCK is preparing the construction of a
centre dedicated to Korean Christian history and
culture to preserve the Christian cultural assets
of Korea. Research has been carried out for the
past year, and a presentation was made to the
NCCK membership on Feb. 15, entitled “History is
the Future which was Conceived in the Past.”
The History and Culture Center Committee have
established a number of goals for the Center. 1. While it will primarily be a benefit to historians
and academics, who will take advantage of the
archive and online archive service, it will also
mean that information on Korean Christianity will
be readily accessible to even members of the
general public, church members, students,
genealogists, etc.
2. A Christian History Network will be set up to
preserve historical records and cultural assets
from across the country, and which will be
accessible from anywhere in the country.
3. A History Tour Program will be established to
engage and educate the public about Korea’s
vital and interesting Christian history and
culture. This program will provide an opportunity
for the church and the local community to have
closer ties, and will ensure the stories and
lessons of the past will not be lost.
4. Finally, the Committee envisions and expects a
revival of the ecumenical movement, as churches
have the opportunity to share their history and
culture with each other in this Korean
Christian History and Culture Centre.
We pray for a fruitful conclusion to this matter in the love of the God of history.

Festive Occasion Recognizes Beginning of Assembly Year
On January 30, 2013, a celebration held at Bexco recognized the arrival of the year
when the World Council of Churches 10th General Assembly comes to Busan in October
and November, and the ongoing preparation taking place was lifted up. A large number
of volunteers recruited from local churches of Busan participated in all aspects of
worship leadership, from stewards to welcome and direct, to a mass choir of about 300
singers and a brass-band, several worship teams, sound and visual effects crews, a
liturgical dance group from EWHA University, a sand artist, etc. Approximately 2000
people took part in the worship service which was led by representatives of the Busan
KHC, who introduced themselves and their work so far. The message was given by Rev.
Kim Sam-Hwan, chairperson of the Korea Host Committee.
The second part of the evening was mainly led by people from the standing Korean
Host Committee and featured WCC delegates. Metropolitan Gennadios of Sassima, the
Moderator of the WCC Assembly Planning Committee, and Rev. Dr. Olav Fykse Tveit,
WCC General Secretary, gave a short message, where they expressed their
appreciation of the progress so far and words of encouragement for the next 10
months.
As a conclusion, three large balloons labeled Life, Peace and Justice, ascended to the
ceiling, trailing flags of the nations whose churches will participate in the General
Assembly, as all were invited to take the hands of their neighbors to depict unity for
our future work.

Vision of God’s Realm in North-east Asia
The Education Dept. made its trip to China, Jan. 28 – Feb. 2, taking 11 students and 3
staff members from member theological colleges. They visited Beijing and Xi’an, one of
the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China.
While there they participated in seminars on the history of Chinese society and saw
many historical and heritage sites of significance to Chinese cultural development. As
well, they heard about Chinese Christianity, and saw sites important to the progress of
Christianity in China, from early days until the present. Prominent in their memories is
the memorial to Matteo Ricci, Jesuit missionary. He came to China in the 1580’s and in
1601, Ricci was invited by the Emperor to become an adviser to the Imperial court; he
was the first Westerner to be invited into the Forbidden City. This honour was in
recognition of Ricci's scientific abilities, chiefly his predictions of solar eclipses, which
were significant events in the Chinese world. Ricci’s observatory is still open to
visitors. They discovered missionaries are largely regarded with respect by the Chinese
for their contributions to Chinese society.
They visited one of the churches and met the pastor in charge, hearing about the
working of the church in the face of many government restrictions on religion.
Although there are Christian churches not recognized by the government, this particular
church is officially recognized by the state.
In addition, the group visited a Theological Seminary in Beijing, and spent time with
students and professors there. Although the Korean theological students were not
impressed with the physical surroundings of the seminary, they were most impressed
with the program the students followed, the efforts they put into their study, their
spiritual practices, and the fellowship they enjoyed through the power of the Gospel.
In China, Christianity is growing rapidly. Although the group did not hear all the reasons
why this should be so, seeing the commitment and Spirit of the professors and students
gave the some understanding as to the growth of the church.
The Common Ecumenical Class have now traveled to 8 destinations. Seeing Japan, and
now China, they came home with a vision as to how North East Asian churches can
work together to support each other for the realization of God’s realm on earth. Such
visits help to dissipate prejudices and stereotypes that societies hold one against the
other.

[February 2013] Greetings from GS
Dear brothers and sisters of the global church,
On Feb. 10 we in Asia celebrated our Lunar New Year Festival. So once again this month, I wish New Year’s Blessings to each and every one.
As I have said before, 2013 is the 60th anniversary of the armistice which brought the active fighting of the Korean War to an end, but did not solve the issues of division of our Peninsula. For Koreans, 60 years is a very significant milestone, pointing to the opportunities of new life. So in this 60th year we seek to make a change in the situation of our national division, especially through a Peace Treaty and true negotiation between governments.
With the WCC 10th General Assembly in Busan this year, we see an enormous opportunity for change in our Korean Peninsula, brought about by the power of prayer and international support. The Peace Train will be a tremendous chance to share the reality of the situation with interested people, in a way that promises to change their lives, and enrich the experience of the General Assembly for all the participants.
Our hope is very strong that we have the opportunity to physically visit in Pyongyang on the way to Busan. We ask your prayers that the political climate will permit it. Also it is our ardent wish that the KCF will attend the General Assembly. We long to share a Korean Plenary on Unification of the Korean Peninsula with them.
This week a NCCK team visited the Russian Orthodox church in Moscow. We discussed with them ways to enrich the Assembly. Members of the Orthodox family of churches will be very visible in Busan. We of the Korean Protestant churches very much wanted to learn from the long history of the Orthodox and from their unique spirituality, and to nurture a friendly relationship in the Family of God.
So let us continuously pray the prayer of the Assembly, “God of Life, Lead us to Justice and Peace”. Let us prepare our hearts for the lessons God will share through this gathering of God’s people.
Kim Young Ju
General Secretary

REMEMBERING A MARTYR OF DEMOCRACY
Democracy came to South Korea in 1987, after many years of peoples’ struggle
against dictatorship. It is important to remember that struggle, and how the rights
have been achieved at great cost.
On Maundy Thursday, March 28, special memorial services were held for the important
journalist and activist for democracy, Jang JunHa, who had died in 1975, as he played a
leadership role in the actions against dictator Park Chung Hee. Two days before, on March
26, 2013, the results of a forensic investigation into the death of Jang, had declared him the
victim of homicide.
Jang had been a leading character in the resistance to the dictatorial Yushin Constitution,
which was brought into effect under President Park in 1972. He was winner of the
prestigious Magsaysay Award for Literature. He was imprisoned 9 times under Park’s
regime, released for the last time in Dec., 1974. In 1975 his body was found dead near a
mountain outside Seoul. The government ruled his death the result of a mountain-climbing
accident.
However, in August last year, Jang’s remains were relocated, and were seen for the first
time in 37 years. At that time, it was noted that there was a fracture on his skull that would
indicate a blow to the head. Family members asked President Lee Myung Bak to order an
investigation. They were supported by citizens groups and the opposition party. Finally, in
Dec., Jang’s remains were disinterred and submitted for examination.
A citizens’ coalition vowed to recognize this important occasion. A number of faith groups
were asked to lead memorial services in these days. NCCK held the first, at City Hall Plaza
at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 28, led by members of the Justice and Peace Committee. The
sermon by Chairperson Rev. Huh Won Bae was entitled “the bones cry out”. Memorial
address was given by Rev. Park Deok Shin, himself an activist in the democracy movement.
That afternoon a later service was held by Catholics, the next day by Won Buddhists and
Buddhists.
By these memorials the participants recommitted themselves to the ideals for which Jang
Jun Ha had died.
