아기 예수의 평화가 온 땅에 충만하기를!
“그는 그 팔로 권능을 행하시고 마음이 교만한 사람들을 흩으셨으니,
제왕들을 왕좌에서 끌어내리시고 비천한 사람들을 높이셨습니다.
주린 사람들을 좋은 것으로 배부르게 하시고, 부한 사람들을 빈손으로 떠나보내셨습니다.”
(누가복음 1장 51~53절)
아기 예수의 탄생을 만물과 더불어 우리 모두 크게 기뻐합니다. 또한 그분의 평화가 온 땅에 가득하기를 기도합니다.
아기 예수는 평화의 구주로 이 땅에 오셨습니다. 그분으로 인하여 우리 가운데 평화가 피어나기 시작했습니다. 그분의 평화는 사랑의 평화이고, 낮은 자들의 평화이며, 자신을 희생하는 평화입니다. 그분의 평화는 힘 있는 자들의 평화와 다른 평화였습니다. 그분의 평화는 무력으로 세운 로마의 평화가 아니었습니다.
그분은, 선지자 이사야가 전한 대로, 광야 같고 사막 같은 이 고통스러운 세상에 평화의 길을 여십니다. 낮은 곳은 메워 높이고, 높은 곳은 깎아서 평탄한 큰길을 내십니다. 이 땅에 교만한 곳도 비천한 곳도 없이 만드십니다.
마리아는 아기 예수를 잉태하고서 하나님께 찬양의 노래를 불렀습니다. 그 노래는 오래 전 이사야가 전한 말씀의 뜻을 다시금 새기는 것입니다. 하나님께서는 아기 예수를 통하여, 마음이 교만한 사람들을 흩으시고, 제왕들을 왕좌에서 끌어내리시며, 비천한 사람들을 높이십니다. 주린 사람들을 좋은 것으로 배부르게 하시고, 부한 사람들을 빈손으로 떠나보내십니다.
그러므로 그분의 평화는 정의를 세우는 평화입니다. 힘없는 사람들을 일으켜 세우시고 권력 있는 자들을 내리시며, 가난한 사람들을 풍족하게 하시고 부를 넘치게 누리는 자들의 손을 비우심으로써 이루는 평화입니다. 그분의 평화는 불의를 물리치고 불평등을 시정하여 모두가 화해하게 하는 평화입니다.
그러나 그분의 평화는 우리 가운데 우리와 함께 하심으로써 이루는 평화입니다. 아기 예수는 갈등과 분열, 억압과 살육이 자행되는 바로 우리 가운데 오십니다. 고통과 슬픔, 절망과 눈물이 넘치는 이 땅 한가운데 오십니다. 그리고 그 아픔을 싸안고 그 눈물을 닦아 주실 것이니, 다시는 죽음이 없고, 슬픔도 울부짖음도 고통도 없게 하실 것입니다.
그러므로 그분의 평화는 요한계시록의 말씀처럼, 우리의 눈물을 닦아 주고 슬픔과 고통을 치유하는 평화입니다. 그분의 평화는 끝내 생명을 품어 살리는 평화입니다. 자신의 가슴을 찢어 우리의 눈물을 그치게 하고, 스스로의 몸을 찢어 우리를 살리는 평화입니다.
아기 예수의 탄생을 기뻐하는 것은 그분의 평화를 기뻐하는 것입니다. 그분의 평화가 우리 가운데 이루어지기를 갈망하는 것입니다. 그분의 평화가 우리의 평화가 되게 하는 것입니다.
2014년 한 해, 이 나라에는 결코 역사책에 기록으로만 남겨놓을 수 없는, 지금도 사람들의 눈물이 마르지 않게 하는 슬픈 일들이 많았습니다.
‘세월호 사건’으로 가족들과 어린 자식들을 떼로 잃어버린 사람들의 슬픔과 아픔, 일터에서 쫓겨난 노동자들의 눈물과 분노, 비정규직 노동자들의 절망과 탄식, 극심한 경제적 양극화로 삶의 한계상황으로 내몰린 사람들의 고통과 비탄, 인권의 사각지대에서 짓밟히는 사람들의 신음과 아우성, 군대에 보낸 자식의 주검 앞에 선 부모들의 분노와 통곡 등, 이 한 해는 일일이 다 거론할 수 없을 만큼 슬픔과 분노와 절망과 아우성과 갈등이 넘쳐났습니다.
이런 절망과 슬픔 가운데 있는 모든 이들에게 아기 예수의 탄생이 큰 위로가 되기를 진심으로 기도합니다. 또한 이 땅에 진정한 화해가 이루어지고 모든 슬픔과 눈물이 마르게 되어 예수 그리스도의 평화가 넘쳐나기를 간절히 기도합니다.
예수 그리스도는 강력한 천상의 힘으로 오시지 않았습니다. 우리 가운데 연약한 아기로 탄생하셨습니다. 그분은 사람의 손에 안기셨습니다. 이것은 그분의 평화는 우리의 참여와 더불어 이루어진다는 점을 가르쳐 줍니다. 아기 예수는 우리에게 안겨 계십니다. 우리는 그분을 감싼 포대기입니다. 우리는 그분을 누인 구유입니다. 그래서 우리는 복됩니다. 그래서 또한 우리는 그분의 평화를 널리 알리는 나팔입니다. 우리는 그분의 평화를 실현하는 도구입니다.
슬픈 이들과 평화를 갈망하는 모든 이들에게 복이 있습니다. 아멘.

2015년 을미년을 맞이하고 있습니다. 이 땅, 이 시대를 살아가는 모든 이들에게 주님의 평화가 임하기를 기원합니다. 새해는 모든 이들이 희망으로 맞이할 수 있는 한해이기를 바랍니다. 예수 그리스도께서는 이 땅의 가장 낮은 곳에서 눈물 흘리는 자들을 위로하심으로 희망이 되셨습니다. 지금 이 순간 가장 낮은 곳에서 눈물을 흘리고 있는 이들에게 희망의 빛이 비치는 한 해가 되기를 기원합니다. 아직 세월호 참사의 아픔이 치유되지 않았습니다. 진상조사와 파악, 사과와 처벌, 배상 등이 철저히 이루어져야합니다. 희생자와 유가족의 눈물이 마르는 일이 시작되기를 바랍니다. 그것을 기반으로 이 사회가 이익 중심의 사회에서 생명 중심의 사회로 바뀌기를 바랍니다. 노동자들이 희망으로 시작할 수 있는 한 해가 되어야겠습니다. 모든 해고노동자들이 직장으로 복귀할 수 있기를 바랍니다. 비정규직 노동자들의 불안이 해소되기를 바랍니다. 모든 노동자들이 자부심과 긍지를 가지고 사회의 일원으로서 기여할 수 있는 사회적 기반을 만들어내야 합니다. 예수께서는 안식일이 사람을 위하여 있다고 말씀하시며 사람중심의 세상을 선포하셨습니다. 2015년의 우리 사회가 이념의 차이가 아니라 사람이 보이는 세상이기를 바랍니다. 피부색의 차이, 생각의 차이, 취향의 차이 이전에 먼저 사람이 보이는 세상이기를 기원합니다. 성소수자들을 비롯하여 모든 소수자들에게도 이 사회의 구성원으로서 당당히 기여할 수 있는 기회가 주어지기를 기원합니다. 2015년은 민족이 해방을 맞이한 지 70년이 되는 해입니다. 한반도의 평화를 더 이상 유보할 수 없습니다. 민족의 화해와 평화가 새로운 전기를 맞이하는 계기가 만들어지는 한 해되기를 바랍니다. 갈등은 화해로, 반목은 화목으로, 증오는 이해로 바뀌어가기를 바랍니다.3,000여년 전 하나님 선지자 미가의 말씀을 되새깁니다. “이 사람아, 야훼께서 무엇을 좋아하시는지, 무엇을 원하시는지 들어서 알지 않느냐? 정의를 실천하는 일, 기꺼이 은덕에 보답하는 일, 조심스레 하느님과 함께 살아가는 일, 그 일밖에 무엇이 더 있겠느냐? “The correct interpretation of the Bible is to read it with the eyes of those who suffer. It is impossible to know without seeing the site.”
Professor Yong-Shil Choi, member of the Reconciliation and Reunification committee of the NCCK brought to mind the difficult situation of the year 2009 when bullets flew around in Bethlehem emphasizing the importance of experience with the body. She said that this is another such occasion about which you cannot know if you don’t see.
She continued. “To read the bible correctly we have to listen to the wails and cries of hardship that come from around the world. This is the reason why Korean Christians have to pay attention to the people who are suffering in Palestine.
A seminar was held on November 28, 2014 with the theme “Looking for peace in Palestine & the Korean Peninsula: Kairos Document and Peace Documents of the Korean Peninsula”, sponsored by NCCK and KCNPP. This seminar was part of a seminar series hosted by KNCCP beginning last June with the theme, “Peace in the Palestine and the Korean Peninsula”, with participation from the NCCK, Korea YMCA National Alliance, YWCA of Korea, Asia-Pacific Life Research Institute, etc.
Professor Choi explained the formation and contents of the Palestine Kairos Document which was announced in December 2009 and the “Declaration of the Korean Church on National Unity and Peace (called Declaration 88)” which was announced in 1988. She emphasized the need to fulfill the basic principles, which are mentioned in those documents, in each detail to achieve a confession of guilt and peace.
She said that Christians resist an unjust policy, law system, and false ideologies; and that we must end this injustice and we should fulfill justice right now and in this crucial time.
The next “Peace seminar” will be held on December 22, 2014.

Greetings to you all in the name of Jesus, soon coming to us again as a child. The coming celebrations of Advent and Christmas also mean that winter has come to Korea. Whenever winter comes I cannot help but think about those struggling with poverty, those who will not have adequate protection from the cold, especially those who find themselves homeless this year. When I imagine the Korean church, I imagine it to be very big, expansive, and splendorous. So I also consider how important it is that God calls us to create space for those struggling with homelessness and hunger.
It reminds me of how Jesus gave us the example of the Samaritan, a cultural punching bag at the time, who Jesus lifted up as a model of neighborly behavior while also calling us to love across cultural boundaries. I am also filled with the parable of the rich man and Lazarus as I pass by those sitting outside houses of wealth waiting for comfort. Waiting for winter also brings to mind the families SEWOL victims, especially those who have been waiting for months for the body of their loved one that was never found. This group is growing very weary, and some have given up the wait. Christianity must find ways to help God bring healing to those suffering at these times.
Too often we Christians become distracted by the temple as the church’s highest calling. We forget about those who suffer as we long for huge and glorious church buildings and thousands of worshippers. However, Jesus regarded the temples we create in a different light. We read in Mark chapter 13: “As he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!’ Then Jesus asked him, ‘Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.’” We must remember that the grandeur of the church will not be everlasting, and is therefore not our main purpose. Our main purpose according to Jesus is helping God to establish heaven among us now, which involves care and empathy for the poor, the homeless, and the hungry. Ever since the financial crisis of the 80’s and 90’s, the intervention of the IMF, and the resulting explosion of homelessness, many Asian countries have struggled to find a solution. As Christmas will soon arrive, we should long and work for the solution of homelessness as much as we put energy into celebrations that await the baby Jesus.
As we continue to pray with and for all of you, we ask you again to continue to pray for Korea. We ask for prayers not only for the struggle against homelessness but also for peace and an end to violent conflict here. The most recent development was the approaching deadline for completing the transfer of ultimate command over Korean armed forces from the US commanding general, with whom it now resides, to the Korean military. This was scheduled to occur in 2012, but President Lee, Myung-Bak delayed the transfer until this year. Now President Park, Geun-Hye has delayed it yet again indefinitely this time. Our government seems to be indefinitely dependent on US power and authority, and this relates to the administration’s hostile attitude toward North Korea. As we need the birth of Jesus, Korea desperately needs reconciliation and transformation into the Shalom of God. Please pray with us.

“We Oppose the Full Opening of the Rice Market that Pushes Farm Workers to the Edge of a Cliff”
Church prayer gathering of the Korean Christian Rural Ministers Association held to focus on food sovereignty and food security
In July, South Korea declared an end to the moratorium on the tariffs of rice imports; in September they notified the World Trade Organization (WTO) of their 513% tariff rates on imported rice; and from January 1st 2015 the rice markets are expected to be completely opened. In addition, on November 10th, President Park Geun Hye while attending the APEC summit, declared the conclusion of the Korea-China Free Trade Agreement (FTA) at the summit of President Xi Jinping. Therefore, voices calling for protection of “food sovereignty” and “food safety” are rising as this perspective appears; that the ensuing hit to Korean farmers will be very significant.
Thus the Korean Christian Rural Ministers Association (KCRMA) on November 20th at 1pm in front of the Seoul Finance Building held an ecumenical prayer gathering opposing the opening of the rice market and rejecting the Korea-China FTA. This is the second prayer service that following the first ecumenical prayer gathering in September and was organized by the “Christian Conference on Food Sovereignty and Food Safety” including Christian organizations such as the NCCK Life & Ethics Committee and the Korea Christian Action Organization.
At the prayer gathering, Rev. Kim Jung Un, chair of the KCRMA gave a sermon asking, “could we not invest the money from IT and exported cars into farming villages?” and offering the critique, “Whenever we conclude the FTA Agreement, only farming villages receive great damage and only sacrifice is emphasized.” He also asked, “In a situation where we don’t know when food shortages might arise, we should not encroach on farmland and drive famers to the brink.” He also requested that, “we realize that agriculture is essential to all things, so please offer prayers and solidarity with the farmers.”
Gang Da Bok, chair of the Korean National Rural Women’s Federation, attending in solidarity, said, “Because of the Korea-China FTA and the opening of the rice market we will be deprived of all stocks of rice, and the falling farming villages will collapse.” She also pointed out that, “Rice is an issue as much as anything else that must be protected.”
The “Christian Conference on Food Sovereignty and Food Safety” offered their critique in a resolution stating, “We should start up a happy feast, but this Thanksgiving has only been depressing. With the news that the rice market is opening and the fall of agricultural goods prices including rice and even more so the news of the Korea-China FTA settlement is ensuring the death of farmers.” The resolution also warned that, “Even now the damage that is flooding China’s agriculture is spreading, and in this situation the news of the Korea-China FTA settlement is the actual last word in giving up on Korean agriculture,” and that, “to urban consumers and citizens and in the end the fate of the nation there are going to be profound lingering effects.”
Also they critiqued the government because, “even though the food crisis is not something that will end after one go around, and while the government will not even raise the minimum safe-guards, they are also seeking to make more FTA agreements with each and every country day after day.” Thus, “passing on the sale of rice to foreign grain companies will pass on our souls to Satan; it is like bowing down to an idol,” they claimed. Here also for citizens they appealed to the wise judgment: “we should know that we are standing at the crossroads as to whether we worship idols and mammon out of baseless illusionism or go the way of food security and life keeping in mind the future of the country and the perspective of farming villages.”
After Rev. Park Deuk Hun of Onmam Church gave the benediction, the pastors and church members attending the “Prayer Gathering against the Opening of the Rice Market” finished up the prayer gathering with a march to the City Hall Square in order to attend the National Farmers Convention held on same day 2pm.

2014년 한국교회 인권선언문
하나님이 당신의 형상대로 사람을 창조하셨으니, 곧 하나님의 형상대로 사람을 창조하셨다. (창세기 1장 27절)
2014년 한국사회는 하나님의 형상대로 지음 받은 인간의 권리가 도처에서 짓밟히고 있습니다. 불행했던 과거 군사독재시절 수많은 이들의 목숨 건 희생과 헌신으로 이룩해 낸 우리 사회의 인권의 가치는 비정한 정권, 무능한 정치, 탐욕적 자본이 결탁한 거대한 카르텔을 통해 끊임없이 추락하고 있는 중입니다.
세월호 참사를 통해 우리는 이 사실을 똑똑히 보았습니다. 거기에는 국민의 생명과 안전을 책임질 정부는 없었습니다. 국민의 아픔을 치유할 정치는 실종되었고 최소한의 행정적 절차도 합리적 문제제기도 이윤 앞에서는 무력하기만 했습니다. 그래서 우리는 세계 최첨단의 수많은 기술과 장비를 보유하고도 단 한명의 생명도 구하지 못하고 죽음으로 내몰아야 했습니다.
이미 오래전부터 정통성을 결여한 권력이 정치적 위기 때마다 사용하던 이념적 대결의 수법이 다시 등장하여 메카시적 종북몰이를 일으키는 가운데 억울하게 체포되고 구금되는 일들이 늘어가고 있습니다. 국가 공안기관에 의해 내란음모가 조작되고, 외국의 공문서를 위조하면서 가짜 간첩을 만들어 내는 곳이 2014년 대한민국의 현실이라는 것이 믿기지 않을 정도입니다.
외부의 적으로부터 나라와 국민을 지켜야 할 군대는 내부의 폭력으로 젊은이들의 생명을 짓밟고 있지만 누구하나 제대로 된 책임을 지는 사람은 없습니다. 무엇보다도 인권의 보루여야 할 법원은 정치의 시녀가 되어 반인권적 판결을 남발하고 있으며 이런 사회 분위기속에서 사회적 약자들에 대한 차별과 혐오는 갈수록 심해지며 생산의 주역인 노동자들의 노동인권은 악화일로에 있습니다.
이제 여기서 멈추어야 합니다. 발걸음을 돌이켜야 합니다. 이 반인권적 현실은 지속가능하지 않습니다. 이 땅 오늘의 참혹한 인권 현실을 외면함으로써 누구도 행복하고 안전한 세상으로 나아갈 수 없습니다. 인권을 지키는 일에 우리 사회의 최소한의 양식을 회복해야 합니다. 그래야 우리 모두가 제대로 된 삶을 살 수 있고, 더 나은 내일을 만들 수 있습니다. 인권을 지키는 일에 정치적 당파성은 없습니다. 이 일에 사회 구성원 모두가 함께 다시 나서야 합니다.
하나님의 형상대로 지음 받은 인간의 고귀함이 지켜지는 세상을 향한 기도의 행진을 이어 온 우리 한국기독교교회협의회 인권센터는 오늘을 함께 사는 모든 이웃들에게, 정부와 국민, 여와 야, 진보와 보수, 자본가와 노동자들 모두에게 이 땅에 무너진 인권의 가치를 다시 세우기를 호소하며 다음과 같이 선언합니다.
1. 국가기관에 의한 폭력을 멈추어야 하며 국가폭력에 대한 억울한 희생자들에 대해 국가가 책임져야 합니다.
2. 법원의 정치적 중립은 보장되어야 하며, 억울한 재판에 의해 구속된 사람들은 즉각석방되어야 합니다.
3. 군대 내 인권을 향상하고 민주적인 군대로 다시 태어나야 합니다.
4. 사회적 약자와 소수자 인권은 우선적으로 보호받아야 합니다.
5. 사상과 표현, 언론의 자유는 보장되어야 합니다.
6. 인권 보장을 위한 법적 제도를 강화하여야 하며 국가인권위원회의 기능이 회복되어야 합니다.
7. 북한인권이 한반도 분단체제의 산물임을 깊이 인식하고 대결과 압박이 아닌 화해협력을 통한 실질적 인권증진의 길을 찾아야 합니다.
8. 노동 인권, 특별히 비정규직 노동자들의 인권과 부당하게 해고된 이들의 빼앗긴 권리가 회복되어야 합니다.
우리는 우리 사회 공동체의 기본 원칙이 인간의 자유와 존엄을 가장 우선시 할 수 있기를 바라며, 이를 실현하기 위해 한국 교회와 함께 파수꾼의 역할을 감당해 나갈 것입니다.

- Rev. Catherine Christie Reports Home in Canada

For the last four months, Rev. Catherine Christie has left her work with the International Relations Department of the National Council of Churches in Korea (NCCK) in order to complete her required home assignment reporting back to churches and communities of her home denomination, the United Church of Canada (UCC). She has just now returned to Korea, but she has given us a report of her efforts in Canada to spread awareness of Korea’s situation.
One of her first visits took her to the UCC General Council Office in Toronto, Ontario. There she met with the moderator of the UCC and shared with him the story of the SEWOL ferry disaster and the subsequent movement for a full investigation and learning the truth of all that caused such a disaster.
For the most part, her travels took her to churches throughout Canada, sometimes giving a sermon, and sometimes a presentation at an evening gathering. Not all presentations were the same; however she always included three special subjects: 1) the coming 70th anniversary of the division of Korea and history of that division; 2) Monday prayers for reunification held by the Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea (PROK); and 3) the SEWOL ferry disaster and the calls for a special investigation bill. Often those she met in Canada listened with great interest, and engaged with her in discussion during question times.
A few times Rev. Christie had the opportunity to give a special presentation on the history of the Canadian – Korean church relationship, especially including the stories of Canadian mission workers assigned to Korea. One such occasion involved the United Church Women (UCW) Presidents meeting. She was able to share specific stories from books like More Than Witnesses, about western missionaries supporting the 80’s democratization movement, and At the Foot of Dragon Hill by Dr. Florence Murray who served in Korea 1921-1961. One story in particular came from Canadians in Korea by Rev. William Scott which told of the pain Canadian mission workers shared with Koreans in having to leave behind their Christian community in the North after the war and of the division into different denominations in 1953.
Ecumenical workers like Rev. Christie provide one valuable opportunity for sharing relationships and stories with denominations around the world. Together we hope to all build closer relationships, stronger bridges, and more intimate ties binding us together so that we may celebrate together, weep together, and struggle for justice together.

서울도서관에 마련된 '4·16 세월호 참사 기억공간'이 추모글이 적힌 노란리본으로 가득하다. © News1 정회성 기자한국 그리스도교 신앙과 직제협의회(공동의장 김희중 대주교·황용대 목사)는 오는 18일 오후 7시30분 서울 명동대성당에서 이웃과 함께하는 성탄음악회 '위로'를 개최한다고 10일 밝혔다. 성탄음악회는 한국 그리스도교 일치의 차원에서 천주교와 개신교가 함께 2002년부터 열어왔다. 종교·정치·경제·사회 등 각계 지도자와 일반인, 소외계층 간의 대화를 통한 우리 사회의 상생을 모색하고 사회·문화적 소외계층에 대한 사회 전체의 관심과 사랑을 증대시키는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 2014년 성탄음악회는 다문화가정 어린이들로 구성된 샬롬소년소녀합창단의 성탄축하송으로 막을 연다. 이어 MBC 강재형 아나운서의 진행으로 소프라노 이선인, 테너 윤승욱, 명창 김수미, 무용가 차다솜, 지휘자 박태영 등 뜻있는 음악인들의 공연이 마련된다. 음악회에는 세월호 유가족, 밀양 주민, 쌍용차 해고노동자, 다문화가정, 새터민, 장애우 등이 초청됐다. 행사는 한국기독교교회협의회와 천주교주교회의가 주관한다. 문의 020-770708432. senajy7@
