5월 3주평화를 위한 기도 25 - 이이즈카 타쿠야(IIZUKA Takuya) 목사, 일본기독교협의회(NCCJ) 동아시아화해와평화위원회 위원장
하늘과 땅을 창조하시고 다스리시는 하나님, 한반도 평화를 위해 기도하며, 우리 일본인들은 우리에게 한반도 평화 실현을 도울 책임이 있음을 고백합니다.
1910년, 일본 정부는 강제 병합으로 한반도를 식민 지배했습니다. 그 이후 일본은 제국주의 정책을 시행했고 정책의 중심에는 일황의 절대 권력이 있었습니다. 36년 간, 일본 정부는 정치, 경제, 문화, 종교 분야에서 한국 사람들을 차별하고 착취하고 박해했습니다. 일본의 식민지가 된 한반도는 제2차 세계대전에 휘말렸고, 전쟁이 끝나면서 두 개의 나라로 갈라졌습니다. 역사에 “만약”은 없지만, 우리는 질문해야 합니다. “한반도가 일본의 식민지가 되지 않았다면…?” 그리고 이에 대한 답은 명확합니다. 우리, 일본인들은 한반도에 평화를 실현할 무거운 책임을 갖고 있습니다.
우리, 일본 기독교인들은 역사를 직면하며 우리 주님 앞에 회개합니다. 일본 교회는 일본 정부가 한반도를 침범하고 박해하고 불법 점령했을 당시 이에 반대하는 목소리를 내지 않았습니다. 대신, 우리는 일본 정부의 전쟁 노력에 적극적으로 협조했습니다. 주님, 당신의 용서를 구합니다. 그러한 실수를 반복하지 않게 하시옵소서.
지금은 우리가 평화를 추구하는 한국 사람들과 연대하여 한반도 평화 실현 과정에 적극 참여해야 할 때입니다. 특별히, 평화 통일은 가장 중요한 문제입니다. 북과 남, 일본이 평화 통일을 공동 기도 제목으로 삼게 하시옵소서. 주님, 조선그리스도교련맹과 한국기독교교회협의회, 일본기독교협의회가 한 자리에 모여 평화를 위해 함께 일하게 하시옵소서.
세계의 창조자이자 지배자이신 하나님께서 “지금이 바로” 한반도 평화 실현을 위한 때라고 선언하십니다. 우리, 한국과 일본의 그리스도인들이 협력하여 빈곤, 차별, 박해 문제 등 공동 과제를 위해 협력하고 소망 안에서 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 화해의 복음을 따라 “화해의 임무” (고후 5:18)를 완성하게 하시옵소서.
Prayer for peace 25 - Rev. IIZUKA Takuya, Chair, The Committee for Peace and Reconciliation in East Asia, The National Christian Council in Japan (NCCJ)
God who created and governs the heavens and the earth, as we pray for peace on the Korean Peninsula, we, the Japanese, confess that we have a responsibility to help make that happen.
In 1910, the Japanese government colonized the peninsula by forcible annexation. Since then, Japan implemented imperial policies that placed the Emperor’s absolute power at its core. For 36 years, the Japanese government had persecuted, exploited, and discriminated against people of the Korea in the fields of politics, economy, culture, and religion. As a result of becoming a Japanese colony, the Peninsula got involved in the Second World War, then was divided into two countries at the end of that war. There are no “ifs” in history, but we have to ask, “What if the Korean Peninsula had not become a Japanese colony…?” And the answer is obvious. We, the Japanese, have a heavy responsibility to realize peace on the Peninsula.
We, the Japanese Christians, face this history and repent in front of our Lord. Japanese Churches did not raise voice against the invasion, persecution, and unlawful occupation of the Korean Peninsula by the Japanese government when it was happening. Rather, we proactively collaborated with the Japanese government’s war effort. Lord, we ask your forgiveness. Lead us not to repeat those mistakes.
It is time to for us to actively participate in peace-making on the peninsula, in solidarity with Koreans who seek peace. In particular, peaceful reunification is the most important issue. Let us make this a subject of common prayer for Christians in North Korea, South Korea, and Japan. Lord, bring the Korean Christian Federation, the National Council of Churches in Korea, and the National Christian Council in Japan to the same table so we may work together for peace.
Our Creator and Governor of this world declares that “Now it is time” for us to make peace on the Korean Peninsula. Let us, the Christians in Korea and Japan, collaborate in our common mission to address such issues as poverty, discrimination, and persecution, in the hope that we may complete “the ministry of reconciliation” (II Co. 5.18) by following the Gospel of reconciliation of our Lord Jesus Christ.

남북한 주민 모두를 사랑해 주셔서 감사합니다.
온정의 하나님,
당신은 한국전쟁 당시 남북의 주민들이 겪은 고통을 알고 있으며, 또한 여전히 고통 받고 있다는 것도 알고 있습니다.
치유의 하나님,
당신은 한국전쟁의 트라우마에 대해 알고 있습니다. 이 고통은 지금까지도 지속되고 있습니다.
화해의 하나님,
당신은 우리의 죄를 용서하십니다. 당신의 사랑은 어떠한 미움보다 강합니다.
평화의 하나님,

God of Love,we praise you because your compassion and mercy has no limits and is able to cross all borders. God of Mercy, we thank you that you love both, the people in North Korea and in South Korea. God of Compassion, you know how much people in the North and in the South have suffered during the Korean War and are still suffering. God of Healing, you know about the trauma of the Korean War, the devastating effects of which are still felt.God of Reconciliation, you can forgive guilt and your love is stronger than all hatred. 우리의 하나 됨을 위하여 이 땅에 성육신 하시고 자신을 십자가에 못 박아 부활의 참 소망을 몸으로 보여주신 사랑의 주님!
구약의 출애급 사건처럼 암울한 식민지의 시대 속에서 당신의 백성을 해방 시키고 새로운 평화의 땅을 주시는 희망의 주님!
어두운 다락방에서 두려움에 떨며 몸을 숨기고 있는 제자들에게 먼저 손을 내미시는 평화의 주님!
우리는 당신의 놀라운 사랑의 역사로 자유를 얻었고, 우리의 공로보다는 당신의 선물로서 희망을 얻었습니다.
하지만 우리의 부족함과 우리의 욕망으로 우리는 당신을 져버렸고, 당신보다는 외부의 조건과 힘을 믿었기에 분단의 아픔을 겪고 있습니다.
한국전쟁 70년을 맞이하는 오늘, 우리는 우리의 지난 시간을 바라보게 됩니다.
배제와 차이와 차별 그리고 우월을 통해서 자신을 증명하고자 우리는 노력했고 그 노력은 바벨탑처럼 당신의 뜻에 도전하며 분단을 영속화 시키는 우리의 행위들이었습니다.
이제 우리가 주님의 평화는 항상 자신을 버림으로 가능하다는 것을 알게 되었으며, 나를 고집하며, 남을 배제하면서 우리는 절대로 당신의 평화를 얻을 수 없음을 배웠습니다.
그리고 이렇게 얻어지는 평화가 당신과 우리가 하나이듯 남과 북도 하나로 가는 유일한 길임을 우리는 고백합니다.
주님 이 분단의 땅에서 우리를 보내주신 사명을 깨닫고 우리를 평화의 사도로 사용하여 주소서!

Prayer for Peace on the Korean Peninsula 23

Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” (John 20:21, NRSV)
O Lord Jesus, God incarnate, who died on the cross to show us the true hope of resurrection!
O Lord of Hope,
who gave us a new land of peace in a gloomy Japanese colonial era as you liberated the people of Israel from the bondage of slavery!
O Lord of Peace,
who reached out first to the disciples who hid themselves in fear in the upper room!
You have given us love and hope as your amazing gifts rather than our own merit.
We have turned away from you by following the paths of greed and our desires.
We have been suffering from the division as we trust in foreign powers rather than you.
As this year 2020 remarks the 70th anniversary of the start of Korean War, we look back to the past.
We tried to prove ourselves through exclusion, discrimination, and superiority, and those vain acts perpetuate the division as the ancient people built the Tower of Babel.
We have learned that the peace of God is always possible by denying ourselves, but we never achieve your peace by practicing the exclusion.
As we become one with your peace, may the North and the South become one in your peace.
Lord, help us to faithfully respond to your calling to be peacemakers in this divided land and make us the instruments of your peace.
We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, the Lord of peace, who sows peace and harvests justice.
Amen!

전능하신 하나님, 우리는 시편 저자의 고백인 “보라 형제자매가 연합하여 동거함이 어찌 그리 선하고 아름다운고“를 선언합니다. 우리는 전쟁으로 인해 한 민족이 분열되어 선하고 아름답지 못한 현실에 놓여있음을 바라봅니다. 한반도의 우리 자매와 형제들은 오랫동안 분단의 고통을 겪었으며, 오랫동안 눈물로 부르짖었습니다. 이들의 기도를 들어 주십시오. 이들의 탄원에 손을 내밀어주십시오. 통일과 평화를 위해 애쓰고 노력하는 이들의 수고를 축복하시고 번영시켜 주십시오.
우리가 살아가고 있는 이 불투명하고 앞이 보이지 않는 이 시대, 이곳에서도 하나님께서 우리를 그림자처럼 지키고 계심을 믿습니다. 한반도에 어둠을 밝히는 빛을 비춰주시기를 기도합니다. 어둠을 깨뜨리시고, 앞으로 나아가는 길이 보이도록, 희망의 빛이 다시 타오르도록 도와주십시오.

Prayer for Reunification- Bishop Reuel Norman O. Marigza, General Secretary, National Council of Churches in the Philippines
Almighty God, together with the Psalmist we declare: “How good and pleasant it is when brothers and sisters dwell together in unity!” We also declare, in equal manner, that an unnatural division of a people by victors of war is not good and an unpleasant reality. Long have our sisters and brothers in the Korean peninsula suffered the pain of separation; long have their cries been poured out. Listen to their prayers. Look with favor upon their petition. Bless and prosper their labor and struggle to bring about reunification and peace.
In the dim unknown of the times we are in, we are certain that even there you stand within the shadow, keeping watch over your own. May you bring to the Korean peninsula the spark that will light up the darkness. May you shatter the gloom and may the light of hope be rekindled that the way forward may be seen.
We join our Korean sisters and brothers in prayer and solidarity that one day in your kairos, walls, fences or borders that separate us one from the other will be no more and that wars shall cease. In the name of Jesus, who promised us true and lasting peace, Amen.

증언 4 '한국 친구들과 함께 한 나의 길'

한국 친구들과 함께 한 나의 “순례”는 1972년 독일에서 시작되었다. 당시 나의 친구들은 유신헌법 반대시위에 동참했다. 이후 친구들은 민주주의를 향한 결의를 표하며 삭발을 단행했고, 대학에서 쫓겨났다. 그리고 백주 대낮에 일본의 한 호텔에서 살해를 목적으로 한 김대중 납치사건이 발생했다.
1976년에는 서울에서 많은 친구들이 체포되어 재판에 넘겨졌다. 나는 1975년부터 일본교회에 선교사로 파송되어 있었고, 일본교회와 독일교회를 대표하여 여러 재판을 방청했다. 나는 거의 매주 도쿄에서 서울로 건너가야 했다. 그런데 1977년 겨울, 한국 정부는 나를 ‘비우호적 인물(PERSONA NON GRATA)’로 선언하고 10년 이상 입국을 불허했다. 체포와 고문을 당하고 재판을 받았던 친구들을 만날 수가 없었다. 당시 수백 명의 학생들과 노동자들, 그리고 성직자들이 고통을 당했다. 수많은 가짜 기소로 사형선고가 내려졌다. 그 중에는 너무나 사랑하는 성남지역 민중교회 교인들이 포함되어 있었다.
도쿄에서 지내는 동안 일본의 기자들, 교계 인사들, 정치인들, 그리고 학생들과 함께 한국에서 오는 소식을 나눌 수 있는 기회가 있었다. 한국 민주주의와 인권을 위한 그들의 전국적 활동은 자신들의 소망을 표현할 목소리도 힘도 없었던 많은 한국인들에게 힘이 되었다. 1979년 박정희 전 대통령이 암살 당했을 때, 한국 안팎의 많은 사람들은 민주주의와 인권을 위한 기회가 올 수 있다고 희망했지만, 1979년 12월에 또 다른 군 장성이 권력을 장악했다. 처음에는 진정한 민주주의와 인권실현을 통해 한반도 통일이 이뤄질 수 있다는 큰 기대가 있었다. 그러나 1980년 5월, 기대와는 전혀 다른 사건이 발생했다.
5월 17일, 나의 아내는 미국인 친구와 함께 도쿄에서 서울로 건너갔다. 그때 그들은 민주주의 정치 발전을 위해 활동하고 있던 학생, 노동자, 그리고 교회의 활동에 관한 정보를 모을 계획이었다. 가까운 친구들, NCCK 인권위원회, 가톨릭 신부, 학생들, 교수들, 그리고 노동조합원들을 만나고자 했다. 그런데 갑작스러운 소음이 들렸고 트럭, 자동차, 탱크, 군대가 나타나 남쪽 방향으로 이동하는 것을 보았다고 한다. 왜 그렇게 많은 군대가 도시를 통과하는 건지, 호텔에 머물던 두 여성은 너무나 이상한 느낌을 받았고 몇 시간 동안 그 움직임을 지켜보았다. 다음 날 아침, 아무도 호텔을 나올 수 없다는 사실을 알게 되었지만 그 누구도 이유를 알지 못했다. 질문만 있을 뿐, 답은 없었다. 나의 아내는 호텔에서 나갈 기회를 얻었고, 어떤 소식이라도 듣기를 바라며 신문사 사무실에 들렀다. 그러나 이야기를 나눌 상대가 없었고, 다시 호텔로 돌아갔다. 통행금지 시간이었지만 막는 사람은 없었다고 한다. 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지 알 수 없어서 호텔에서는 더 혼란스러웠다. 9시 정도에 몇몇 친구들에게 전화를 걸었지만, 대부분 연결되지 않았다. 그런데 가까운 친구 한 명이 남쪽에 있는 광주에서 무슨 일이 벌어지고 있으며 군대가 광주를 급습했다는 소식을 알려주었다. 그리고 또 다른 친구로부터 전화가 왔고, 많은 친구들이 경찰에 체포되었다는 이야기를 들었다. 당시 급박했던 상황 때문에 아내와 아내의 친구는 만날 수 없었다.
나는 도쿄에서 기다렸던 아내의 연락을 받았고, 독일 기자들에게 이 소식을 전했다. 그 중 한 명은 신속하게 서울행 비행기를 탔지만, 서울에서 광주로 가는 길은 쉽지 않았다. 기차도, 버스도 없었고 광주에 친구도 없었다. 그럼에도, 다음 날 그는 광주에 도착했고 그가 본 것을 영상에 담았다. 그리고 그 영상을 도쿄행 비행기로 보냈고, 그는 다시 광주로 돌아갔다.
나는 독일 TV 기자들과 협력하며 그 원본 영상을 보았다. 며칠 후 이 영상은 독일에서 방송되었고, 전 세계로 퍼졌다. 지금까지도 나는 그 영상에 대해 표현할 수가 없다. 내 아내와 그녀의 친구가 도쿄로 돌아온 후 3일 정도 지나서 나와 기자들에게 말해준 바에 의하면, 당시 어디에나 경찰과 군인들이 있었다고 한다. 몇 주 동안 광주에 있는 사람들에게는 전화 연락이 닿지 않았다. 가장 끔찍했던 것은 힌츠피터(Hinzpeter) 기자가 찍은 사진들이었다. 얼마 지나지 않아 우리는 미 정부가 한국군대의 광주시민 진압을 승인했다는 사실을 알게 되었다. 북한군의 공격으로부터 시민을 보호해야 할 군대가 시민을 진압한 것이다.
한국 입국이 다시 허용된 후 1988년, 나는 독일에서 한국으로 입국해 곧장 광주의 묘지를 방문했고 그곳에서 하루 동안 머물렀다. 1980년에 사망한 사람들의 가족과 친구들이 있었고, 신원 확인을 위해서는 시신 발굴이 필요했다. 내가 절대로 잊을 수 없는 얼굴들이 있다. 1976년 김지하를 비롯하여 법정에 섰던 사람들과 그 가족들의 얼굴을 잊을 수 없다. 그리고 내가 사랑한 장소들이 있다. 민중교회와 성남, 광주, 그리고 제주도이다. 올해에 다시 이 노래가 들려온다. “앞서서 나가니 산자여 따르라.”
Witness 4 'My walk with Korean friends' - Rev. Paul Schneiss
My “pilgrimage” with friends in Korea started in Germany when I joined a demonstration of these friends against the Yushin-Constitution in 1972. Later my friends cut their hair to show their commitment to democracy and were dispelled from the university. The next experience was when Kim Dae Jung, the later president, was kidnapped from a hotel in Tokyo in broad daylight to be killed on his way to South Korea.
In 1976 many of my friends were arrested and put to trial in Seoul and I was asked to attend these trials on behalf of my German church and my Japanese church, where I was serving as a missionary since 1975. Nearly every week I had to travel from Tokyo to Seoul – In December 1977, the Korean government declared me a persona non grata and expelled me for more than 10 years. It was hard not to be able to meet the friends who were arrested, tortured, put to trial. Hundreds of students and workers, some clergy too. A lot of fake indictments led to death sentences. Among them a member of my beloved minjung church in Songnam-city, near Seoul.
During those years in Tokyo I had the chance to share the news from Korea with journalists, church people, politicians and students in Japan. Their nationwide movement for democracy and human rights in Korea was encouraging for many people in Korea who had no voice nor power to demonstrate their own hopes. When president Park was assassinated in October 1979 many people in Korea and outside hoped that democracy and human rights would have a chance - but another military general took control of the country in December 1979. At first there was great hope that the country would move for real democracy and the establishment of Human Rights as preparation for unification of the whole country. But then in May 1980 developments took on a very different character. On May 17 my wife and her American friend travelled from Tokyo to Seoul. They were expected to collect information about activities of students, workers and churches who were all campaigning for true democratic political developments. They were expected to meet close friends, the Human Rights Committee, the National Council of Churches, a Catholic Bishop, students and professors, and members of labor unions. Then suddenly this noise: trucks, cars, tanks – the military was appearing and moving in a southward direction. This took hours and hours: why was so many military moving through the city? A very strange feeling overcame the two women in their hotel, but they followed these moves for hours. In the early morning they realized that nobody could leave the hotel. And nobody knew why. Only questions, no answers. My wife found a way to leave the hotel and dropped in at a newspaper company hoping to get any news. But nobody was there to talk to. So she went back to her hotel. Though there was curfew nobody stopped her. But at the hotel there was still more confusion. Nobody knew what really was going on. About 9 o’clock my wife tried to phone some friends, most without connection. Only one very good friend told her that something is going on in the south, that is Kwangju, and that the military is making an assault on the city of Kwangju. Then another friend, she called by phone, told her, that many of our friends had been arrested by police. Because of this situation my wife and her friend could not meet.
Then my wife called Tokyo. I was waiting for this call. After that I contacted German journalists. One of them took the next plane to Seoul. From Seoul to Kwangju travelling was not easy: no train, no bus, no friend in Kwangju. Yet, the next day he managed to arrive in the city and filmed what he saw. He took the film to the next plane bound for Tokyo – and returned again to Kwangju.
This original film I saw when I cooperated with the journalists of German TV. A few days later this film was shown on TV in Germany and all over the world. Until now I cannot describe the film. When my wife and her friend arrived back in Tokyo some three days later they told me and the journalists more of her experience: police and soldiers were everywhere. For weeks people in Kwangju could not be reached by phone. But the most frightening experience were the pictures brought by the journalist Mr. Hinzpeter. Very quickly we learned that the then US-government had given permission to the Korean military to make the assault on Kwangju citizens, the military that was expected to defend against any North Korean aggression.
When I finally was allowed to enter Korea again, in 1988 (travelling from Germany) I went straight to Kwangju cemetery and stayed there for one day, when families and friends of persons killed in 1980 had to be exhumed to find out about their identity. - These faces I will never forget are of those who were on trial in court, starting with Kim Chi Ha in 1976, and their families; the places I love are Songnam with the minjung church, Kwangju and Chejudo. This year I hear anew: “We are marching on; keep faith n follow us.”

역사 속에 살아계신 하나님!
40년 전 군부독재 계엄군에 의해 광주가 살육의 도시가 되었을 때, 우리 하나님은 계엄군이 비 오듯 쏘아대는 발포현장에서 피 흘리며 쓰러지는 광주시민들과 함께 계셨습니다. 당시 병상에서 치료받는 부상자들과 의료진들 속에 계셨음을 감사드립니다. 눈에 넣어도 아깝지 않은 내 자식과 사랑하는 내 남편을 잃은 유족들이 지난 40년간 너무도 쓰리고 아팠던 세월을 지낼 때 하나님께서 함께 해주셨음을 믿고 감사드립니다.
5월의 피 흘림이 결코 헛되지 않아 광주시민들은 학살자를 법정에 세우고, 5월 항쟁정신을 해마다 망월묘역에서 기념하게 되었습니다. 5월 항쟁정신이 아시아를 넘어 온 세계에서 아직도 독재정권 아래 고통 받는 이들의 모범과 희망이 되어 온 것을 감사드립니다.
정의로우신 하나님!
쿠데타로 정치권력을 찬탈한 전두환 일당은 “12. 12 군사쿠데타 40주년 기념 자축연”을 여는 망동을 하고 있습니다. 학살자 전두환은 아직도 살아서 “발포명령을 내리지 않았다” “헬기사격도 없었다”라고 거짓말하고 있습니다.
자유한국당 “5. 18 망언 3인방”은 “5. 18 광주민주화운동을 광주 폭동”이라고 했고, “5. 18 국가유공자라는 괴물집단을 만들어 우리의 세금을 축내고 있다”며 광주유공자를 모욕했습니다. 안타까운 사실은 5월 항쟁기간 그 많은 여성들이 당한 성폭행은 아직 진상규명조차 되지 않고 있습니다. 5월 망언자들은 처벌되지 않았고, 발포명령자도 나오지 않고, 전두환은 거짓으로 진실을 덮고 있으며, 진정한 회개와 사과를 하지 않고 있습니다.
역사의 심판자요 해결자가 되시는 하나님! 5. 18 망언자와 폄훼세력들에게 정의를 세우소서! 새 국회가 5. 18 진상규명 특별위원회 사명를 잘 감당케 하소서!

40년 전 희생당한 광주의 영령들을 위로하시고, 유족들 위에도 그리스도의 은총의 빛 안에서 한없는 복을 받게 하시옵소서!
이 땅 위에 하나님의 정의와 사랑이 넘치고, 남과 북이 하나님의 사랑 안에서 하나되며, 가난한 자들이 희망을 갖고 살아가는 세상, 평화통일을 이루어 가는 ‘하나님의 나라’를 허락해 주시옵소서! 이 세계와 우리 민족과 한국교회의 영원한 소망이 되시는 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 간절히 기도드리옵나이다. 아멘!
Prayer in Commemoration of the May 18th Democratization Movement- Elder Ahn, Seong-rye (Former chair of May Mothers)
God, who lives in history!
Forty years ago, when Gwangju became a city of slaughter at the hands of the military dictatorship martial law forces, our God was present bleeding with Gwangju citizens at the site of the shooting where the bullets of the martial law army fell upon the citizens like rain. Thank you for being present at the sickbed of the injured seeking treatment and among the medical staff tending to the fallen at that time. I believe that God has remained with my children, the apple of my eye, and the bereaved families who lost their loved ones, who have suffered bitterness and sickness for the past 40 years, and I thank God for that.
As the blood of that month of May was never shed in vain, Gwangju citizens have taken the perpetrators of that massacre to court, and we celebrate the spirit of that May's resistance struggle at Mangwol Cemetery Station every year. I am thankful for that May’s spirit of resistance that has served as an example and as hope for those in Asia and throughout the world struggling against dictatorship.
God of justice!
Chun Doo-hwan and his group, who seized political power in a coup d’etat, now face a new flurry of trouble for holding a "40th Anniversary Celebration of the Dec. 12th Military Coup D’etat." Massacre Chun Doo-hwan is still alive and lies about "no firing orders" and "no helicopter shooting." The massacre perpetrator, Chun Doo-hwan, is still alive and continues to lie about there being "no orders to fire" and "no helicopter shooting."
The Liberty Korea Party's "May 18th Reckless-Words-Trio" insulted the Gwangju People of Merit by calling the May 18th Gwangju Democratization Movement a, "Gwangju Riot" and saying, "We are wasting our taxes by creating a May 18th Group of National Merit for a Group of Monsters." Unfortunately, the sexual assault that many women suffered during the May uprising has also yet to be uncovered. The May 18th Reckless-Words-Trio have not been punished, the orders to fire on that day have not been published, Chun Doo-hwan falsely covers up the truth, and he has not offered any real repentance or apology.
God, the Judge and Resolver of history!
Uphold justice against the May 18th Reckless-Words-Trio and the powers of denigration!
Let the newly elected National Assembly handle the mission of the Special Committee on Fact-finding on May 18!

Comfort the spirits of Gwangju, who were sacrificed 40 years ago, and let them be blessed in the light of Christ's grace!
May God grant us “God’s Nation”, where God's justice and love are overflowing on this earth, where South and North Korea are united in God's love, and the poor live with hope and achieve peaceful unification!

분단을 극복하는 것이 얼마나 어렵고 평화를 만드는 것이 얼마나 어려운지 우리는 알고 있습니다. 트라우마와 상처를 치유하는 길은 셀 수 없이 많지만 개인적, 정치적 모임과 대화, 그리고 세심한 배려가 필요합니다.
나는 알고 있습니다: 모세는 약속의 땅에 들어갈 수 없었습니다 – 나는 묻습니다: 우리 세대가 한반도에 영구적 평화가 정착되고 화해가 이루어 지는 것을 볼 수 있을까? 때로는 의심이 듭니다.
그러나 나는 성서에서 읽습니다: 모세와 미리암과 아론의 인도 하에 사막을 통과 한 이스라엘 백성의 여정은 그 목표에 도달했습니다. 이 이야기는 수 많은 좌절에도 불구하고 정의와 평화의 순례를 계속하고 있는 세계 에큐메니칼 공동체들에게 큰 격려를 더해 주고 있습니다.

Merciful God,
How difficult it is to overcome divisions and how difficult it is to create peace. The way to overcome traumas and injuries is so endless and requires many personal and political meetings, conversations and a lot of mindfulness.
I know: Moses could not enter the Promised Land – I ask: will our generation experience lasting peace and reconciliation on the Korean peninsula? Sometimes I have doubts.
But I read in the Bible: The path of the people of Israel through the desert, which Moses and Miriam and Aaron led, came to its goal. This narrative encourages me for our pilgrimage of justice and peace in the worldwide ecumenical community, even though there are always setbacks.
God, let your strength work, so that all who are on the journey together for peace, justice and reconciliation may reach their goal. Give us patience and perseverance, courage and fellowship in our commitment to peace and reconciliation in Korea. Be with us with your unifying and reconciling spirit.
Help the women to confidently present their proposals for peace processes. Help the men to find and follow paths together with them. Let us keep our goal in mind and let us give no room to power games.
Give the Korean children in the South and the North a peaceful and good future! Amen.

한반도에 저희 민족을 살게 하시고 유구한 역사 속에 민족의 정체성을 지켜 오게 하신 것을 감사하옵니다. 수많은 외세의 침입 속에서도 나라를 지키며 한 번도 남의 나라를 먼저 침입하지 않은 평화의 민족이 되게 하신 것을 감사하옵니다.

Holy and merciful God,
We thank you that you have provided a life for us on this Korean Peninsula and allowed us to keep our national identity until now. We thank you that you are making us into a peaceful nation, even though many countries have invaded our land.
We thank you that you have blessed many of us with the Gospel of Christianity. Also we thank you that you have blessed us as a nation of mission throughout the world. Christ said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave.” Now the period of the empire of the Gentiles is passing, and the peaceful Kingdom of God is expanding. Our Korean Church dreams of a world of peace and love.
However, we have been divided into two nations for seventy-five years. Grant us the peaceful reunification of the Korean peninsula, and help us to contribute to the peace of the world.

하나님,
지구상에는 지금 이 순간에도
크고 작은 전쟁이 일어나고 있다고 해요.
정말 무서운 전쟁을 지구상에서 몰아내주세요.
하나님은 우리에게 서로 사랑하며 살라고 하셨는데
폭력을 일삼고 전쟁을 벌이는 인간들을
불쌍히 여겨주시고 그 죄를 용서해주세요.
특히 동북아시아 지역은
역사적으로도 오랜 갈등과 파괴가 지속된 곳이라고 하는데요.
또다시 전쟁의 먹구름이 몰려오지 않도록
모두가 하나님께 회개하고 평화가 유지되게 도와주세요.
과거의 아픈 일들이 되풀이 되지 않도록
잘못한 사람은 진정한 사죄를 하고
용서가 필요한 사람은 용서를 할 수 있게
우리를 도와주시고 오직 선한 길로 인도해주세요.

I heard that even at this moment there are both large and small-scale conflicts in every corner of the globe. Can you stop wars and let there be peace all around the world?
Lord,
You told us to love one another, but we wage wars, I ask you forgive our sins.
God,
I also heard that the region of Northeast Asia is a place where long conflicts have continued.
I pray that people repent of their sins so you, dear God, keep peace preventing the dark clouds of war.
Lord,
The painful things of the past cannot be repeated again today.
May the wrongdoers first admit that they did something wrong and apologize to the victims!
Lead us to only in good ways!

이들은 지난 3세대에 걸쳐 지속적인 분열과 고통 속에 살아 왔습니다.
전쟁을 경험한 구세대는 통일에 대한 희망을 새롭게 다지기를
또한 전쟁을 경험하지 않은 신세대는 전쟁이 아닌 평화를 사랑하는 방법을 배우기를 기도합니다.
모두의 번영을 위해 하나된 한반도를 이루어 주시기를 간구합니다.
생명의 하나님,
우리는 지금 그 어느 누구도 예상하지 못한 세계적 유행성 질병과 마주하고 있습니다.
특히 한반도의 형제 자매들이 지혜롭게 어려운 시절을 잘 극복해 나가기를 함께 기도합니다.
의료 체계가 붕괴되고, 사람들이 고립되며, 외국인 혐오증 같은 배척과 증오가 점점 늘어가고 있는 이때에 주님의 지혜와 기적을 간구합니다. 지금의 상황으로 한반도 평화 조약을 위한 우리 모두의 노력이 헛되이 되지 않도록 인도하여 주옵소서.
생명의 하나님,
이사야 예언자의 말씀처럼, 어미가 새끼를 돌보듯이 우리에게 은혜를 베푸사,
우리의 마음이 다시 기뻐하고 우리의 뼈가 다시 새로운 힘을 얻게 하옵소서.

God of life!
We are desperately longing for this vision! You promise peace - and our sisters and brothers on the Korean Peninsula are facing 70 years of no peace already. This means three generations who are used to a constant state of division, pain and grief.
We pray for peace, so that the older generation may renew their hope for reunification.
We pray that the young people learn to love peace more than continued war.
We pray for a reunited Korea, that includes prosperity and equity for all.
God of life!
We are facing a pandemic with conditions we are not prepared for.
Our brothers and sisters on the Korean Peninsula have to deal with this crisis under very different preconditions. What can be done, when health systems collapse? When people suffer from isolation or xenophobia?
We pray for help and wisdom.
We pray for signs of humanity in these troubled times.
We pray that the current situation does not distract the attention from all efforts for a peace treaty.
God of life!
We are longing for the comfort of your caring arms. As the prophet Isaiah says, you want to care for us like a loving mother with her all-embracing sight. Our hearts shall be glad again and our bones shall get new strength. Let this mercy be seen by your beloved children of Korea.

이 땅에 긍휼을 베풀어 주소서.
남과 북으로 끊기고 갈라진 70년의 몸서리치는 아픔을
온 몸으로 견디어내는 이들의 눈물을 살피소서.
이산의 아픔으로 슬퍼하는 이들,
고향 산천을 그리워하며 울부짖는 이들,
민족의 하나 됨을 위해 부르짖는 이들,
멈추어버린 개성공단과 금강산 사업으로 인해 어려움 당하는 이들,
땅, 하늘, 핏줄, 겨레, 민족, 역사의 갈라진 흔적들로 인해
여전한 고통을 고스란히 감당하고 있는 이들에게 긍휼을 베푸소서.
주님!
이 땅에 하나님의 정의를 실현하소서.
일본 제국주의를 미화하고 민족 분단을 촉발케 하였음에도

수많은 민중들이 살이 찢기는 아픔을 겪을 때

O God!
Have mercy on this land.
Witness the ones whose whole bodies have endured with trembling the pain of North and South Korea having been divided for 70 years.
For those who grieve for the pain of separation,
For those who wail in longing for their hometown of Sancheon,
For those who cry out for the nation to become one,
For those who are suffering because the Kaesong Industrial Complex and Mount Kumgang projects were stalled,
For the earth, the sky, the veins, the people, the nation, and the history that continue to cope with the vestiges of division,
God have mercy.
O God!
May your justice be realized on this earth!
For those who have they supported Japanese imperialism and triggered national division,
As they distort history and try to justify their deceit,
For these who seek to hide the evil they have committed, do not withold your judgement of their arrogance.
God, remember those whose flesh was been torn,
By tyrants who sought to build their kingdom of division.
Bring their cries to into the light of history,
So that your justice may encourage their healing.
O God!
Let a spring season of reconciliation come to this land as soon as possible.
Through the April 27th Panmunjom Declaration,
May the spring outing that the good people of the South and the North dream of and carry in their hearts,
Turning the 500-kilometer-long Demilitarized Zone into a peace garden,
Lighting up every light of the Kaesong Industrial Complex and ever valley of Mount Kumgang,
May it lead to reconciliation.
O God!
Grant this land a blooming spring day that is filled with the wild flowers of peace.
From Mt. Halla’s Baekrokdam Crater Lake, to Mt. Baekdu’s Cheonji Crater Lake, to the ferries and ports of unkown names on the Tumen River,
Like spring flowers blooming in every field and valley on the Korean peninsula,
Let children's laughter become flowers of peace,
And the smiles of our elders become flowers of reconciliation,
And may the sweat of the workers, the peasants, the foreign workers, the COVID-19 pandemic teams and medical personnel, the marginalized and the lowly,
The sweat of all the good people of South and the North Korea be gathered together,
So that the day like a fully blooming flower garden of peace and reconciliation may soon come.
In the holy name of Jesus on whom we depend,
Who will come to this land for peace and reconciliation,

증언3 '한 장기복역수의 마지막 편지'
- 신승민(Shin Seungmin) 목사, 한국기독교교회협의회(NCCK) 국장
최인정씨는 1927년 북에서 태어났습니다. 그는 북의 최고 대학 중 한 곳에서 고등교육을 이수했으며 노동당원이 되어 정부 교통국에서 일했습니다. 최씨는 임기천과 결혼하여 4명의 자녀를 두었고, 1964년에 간첩으로 남쪽에 파견 될 때까지 행복한 가정을 꾸려 왔습니다. 그러나 남파된 지 이틀 만에 경찰에 체포되어, 1967년 간첩혐의로 기소되었습니다. 결국 그의 나이 61세인, 1988년 석방될 때까지 21년이라는 세월을 감옥에서 보냈습니다. 그러나 석방된 지 2년 만인 1990년, 그는 간암 말기 진단을 받았으며, 1년 동안의 투병 끝에 이듬해 1991년 11월 21일에 사망했습니다. 그가 사망하기 몇 달 전, 북에 있는 아내에게 공개 서한을 보냈습니다. 이 서한에서 그는 “내가 죽기 전 나의 유일한 바람은 당신과 우리 아이들을 보고 우리에게 일어난 모든 일에 대해 미안하다고 말하는 것입니다.”[1]고 말했습니다.
1991년 10월, 사망하기 한달 전에 최인정씨는 NCCK의 인권위원회에도 한 통의 편지를 보냈습니다. 그의 편지는 한반도 분단의 비극적인 상황을 나타내는 깊은 고통과 슬픔으로 가득 차 있었습니다. 인권위원회는 즉시 통일부에 연락하여 최씨와 그의 가족의 짧은 상봉을 요청했습니다. 다행히 통일부는 우리의 요청을 받아 들였고, 11월 20일까지 남북주민접촉신청서를 보내라고 통보했습니다. 이 신청서에서는 최씨 가족상봉은 12월 31일 판문점 공동경비구역에서 20-30분 동안 진행하는 것으로 되어 있었습니다. 나는 즉시 그에게 연락을 취했고, 그는 매우 기뻐했습니다. 드디어 11월 20일 그가 사는 대전에서 서울로 상경하여 같이 신청서를 통일부에 제출하기로 약속하였지만, 안타깝게도 간암이 악화되어 그 날 상경할 수 없었습니다. 그는 결국 다음 날 새벽 11월 21일 북의 가족을 갈망하면서 생을 마감하였습니다.
그의 사망 후 우리는 남쪽 정부에 그의 편지를 부인에게 넘겨달라고 호소했지만, 정부는 이산가족으로부터 수천 건의 유사한 요청에 직면하는 것을 두려워하면서 우리의 요청을 거부하였습니다. NCCK는 결국 세계교회협의회(WCC)의 도움으로 그의 아내에게 그 서한을 전달할 수 있었습니다.

Witness 3 'A Story of a Long-term Political Prisoner'- Rev. Shin Seungmin, Director, NCCK
Choi In-Jung was born in North Korea in 1927. He completed his higher education in one of the best universities in North Korea, became a labor party member and worked with the government transportation department. He got married to Lim Ki-Chun and had four children. They made a happy family until he was dispatched to South Korea as a spy in 1964. Just two days after his arrival in the South he was arrested by the police and charged of espionage in 1967. He served 23 years’ prison term and was released in 1988. He was 61 years old when he was released, which meant that he spent many of his productive years in prison. But in 1990, just two years after his release, he was diagnosed with the last period of liver cancer. He struggled with the cancer for almost a year and died on November 21 in the following year. Just few months before his death, he wrote an open letter to his wife in North Korea, saying that “my only wish before I die is to see you and our children and say sorry to them about all what happened to us.”
On October, 1991 just a month before his death, Choi sent a letter to the Human Rights department of the NCCK with which I worked as an executive secretary. His letter was full of deep feelings of suffering and sorrow, representing the tragic situation of Korea’s division. My department immediately contacted the Unification Ministry of the South Korean government to request a short meeting between Choi and his family. Fortunately the Unification Ministry accepted our request and asked us to send an application form by November 20. The meeting was scheduled for 20-30 minutes on December 31 in the Joint Security Area of Panmunjom. I contacted Choi, and he was very excited and happy about the news and agreed to travel from his place to Seoul on November 20 to submit the application form. But unfortunately he could not make it because of his worsening sickness. On the following day, November 21, he died, longing for his family in North Korea.
After his death we appealed to the South Korean government to hand over his letter to his wife, but the government refused to do it, being afraid of facing thousands of similar requests from separated families in South Korea. As far as I remembered, we were eventually able to deliver his letter to his wife with the help of the World Council of Churches (WCC).

God of Peace,
Who created this world and saw that it was good,
We acknowledge before you now that we are part of a world that has as much conflict and tension as it does peace.
Revive in all people, we pray, a sense of your peace, which passes our understanding, but lifts our eyes and hearts above competition to cooperation,
above petty disputes to compromise,
above tension to harmony.
Let your Holy Spirit, breath of all creatures, purifier of all souls and healer of all wounds;
be fire to our heart, light to our path and friend for our journey as we seek to rebuild peace in your world.
We pray particularly for peace in the whole of Korea, for efforts to agree a Peace Treaty, for attempts to reduce the worst of our armaments, for talks about cooperation.

오랜 분단과 전쟁에 대한 두려움에 시달리는 한국인들을 생각하며 기도합니다. 분단현실은 사람들에게 너무 오랫동안 불신과 고통을 주었습니다. 이 현실은 계속되는 고통이며 우리는 세계교회의 친교 속에서 그들의 아픔에 동참합니다.
주님, 한반도의 평화는 그들 만의 것이 아닙니다. 한반도의 평화를 통해 세계의 평화를 더 가능하게 할 수 있습니다.

Peace Prayer 15 "Prayer for peace on the Korean peninsula"- Bishop Hee-Soo Jung, presiding bishop of Wisconsin Annual Conference and president of General Board of Global Ministries, United Methodist Church
We pray to you, thinking of Koreans who have been hurt by long division and fear of war. Divided reality has given people unbelief and pains too long. This reality is on-going suffering and it causes our pain and struggles in the communion of the global church.
Lord, Peace on the Korean peninsula is not just theirs. The peace of the world can be made closer through peace on the Korean peninsula.
Now, we join a campaign to remember the 70th years of Korean War and to engage the world churches for the support of peace treaty and reconciliation of North and South Korea. Bless this historic moment as the Korean church and the world church are joining again for this significant liberation and freedom.
Do you remember the many people who have lived a scissored life every day? How long, Lord?
Tears shed so long and it shed to all over the world, as they struggle and miss our separated family and friends.
We thanked the Lord to see the leaders of the South and the North Korea stopping the cold war and talk and exchange with such visionary stage. We thrilled to see the Lord grant the initial step toward the peace to the Korean peninsula after seeing the leaders of North Korea and the United States meet and share a dream of reconciliation.
Lord, May you be a mediator. And create a relationship of reconciliation, not a tragedy and confrontation anymore.
Use your cross as a sign of the end of division and help us to begin to love one another. Help the Christians scattered around the world to share in the 2020 year for building the peace and reconciliation.
We pray earnestly in the name of the Lord. Amen

저는 금강산에서 사업을 하셨던 창희식품 이창희 대표의 딸 이상영입니다.
저희 가족은 대표이신 저희 아버지, 어머니와 저, 동생 네 식구가 다른 가정과 다를 바 없는 단란한 가정이었습니다. 항상 바쁘신 부모님의 사업으로 가족들이 일을 함께 하는 일이 많아 서로 무척 가까웠습니다.
2000년 초반 저희 부모님은 금강산에서 사업을 시작하셨습니다. 관광을 다녀오신 분이라면 관광지마다 따라다니는 빨간색의 황금마차라고 쓰인 푸드트럭을 기억하실 겁니다. 한 번 보면 기억을 하는 강한 인상을 주던 푸드트럭이 저희 아버지가 운영하시던 황금마차였습니다. 강한 기억을 남기자던 저희 아버지의 아이디어로 만들어진 트럭은 북쪽 사람들도 기억을 할 정도였습니다.
그 당시엔 금강산 관광이 시작된 지 얼마 되지 않아 편의시설이 많이 부족했습니다. 하나밖에 없는 편의점에서 모든 필요한 것들을 사야 했을 정도로 말입니다.
여름에는 타는 듯이 덥고 겨울에는 눈을 치워야 안으로 들어갈 수 있을 정도로 추운 컨테이너 숙소에서 저희 부모님은 누구보다 열심히 일하셨습니다. 개인사업자로서는 최초로 들어오셨다는 사명감으로 다른 젊은 직원에 뒤지지 않을 만큼 열심히 하셔서 당시 신문이나 tv를 통해서도 부모님의 넘치는 열정을 자주 볼 수 있었습니다.
시간이 갈수록 금강산관광이 알려지며 저희 부모님은 나라를 위해서도 일한다는 생각에 시간과 돈 모든 열정을 금강산에서의 사업에 투자하셨습니다. 잠시 일을 보러 남쪽으로 내려오셔야 할 때를 제외하고는 모든 시간을 금강산에서 보내셨습니다. 그렇게 열심히 노력하신 덕분에 저희 가족은 처음으로 해외로 가족여행을 다닐 수 있었고 저와 제 동생이 하고 싶었던 공부도 어려움 없이 할 수 있게 되었습니다. 그 때가 우리 가족에겐 가장 행복했던 시간이었습니다.
모든 것이 완벽해 보이던 때, 모든 것이 무너져 내리기 시작했습니다. 2008년 7월 11일 박왕자 씨가 총격으로 사망하는 사건이 일어나면서 금강산에서의 모든 관광활동이 중단되었고 저의 부모님께서는 자신들의 모든 인생을 남겨두고 금강산에서 내려와야 했습니다.
하루, 일주일, 일년...시간이 지날수록 저희 부모님 속은 타들어 갔고, 점점 지쳐가셨습니다.
아무런 기약 없이 무작정 기다려야만 하는 저희 부모님은 아침뉴스부터 마감뉴스까지 혹여 금강산관광 재개라는 특보라도 나올까 늘 TV 주변을 맴도셨고 그런 기다림은 초조함으로 번져 항상 날이 서 계신 부모님은 싸움도 잦게 되었습니다. 무작정 기다림의 시간은 저희 부모님의 마음을 깎아가며 병으로 자리 잡았고 답답함을 이기고자 일기를 쓰시던 어머니는 가슴의 화를 몸이 버티지 못하고 2010년 유난히 추웠던 3월 먼저 눈을 감으셨습니다.
항상 모든 것을 함께 해오신 어머니를 잃은 저희 아버지는 기력을 많이 잃으셨습니다. 저와 동생은 미력하나마 어머니를 대신해 생계를 위해 학업을 중단하고 생활전선에 뛰어들었습니다. 조금씩 힘을 내시던 아버지는 없는 돈을 모아 작은 가게를 시작하셨습니다. 그러나 자금 없이 시작한 사업은 힘든 일이 생길 때마다 휘청거렸고 더 이상 나아지지 않았습니다.
시간이 갈수록 점점 어려워지는 사업으로 저와 동생은 아버지의 보탬이 되고자 서로 각자 돈을 벌며 생계를 꾸려 나갔습니다. 밤낮없이 일을 하며 주말에도 쉬지 않고 그렇게 저와 동생은 아버지를 도우며 버텼습니다. 그렇게 정리되지 않은 금강산 사업은 저희 가족에게 밑 빠진 독이 되어 항상 저희 가족을 힘들게 했습니다.
그러기를 3년, 제가 몸이 아프기 시작하면서 저를 대신해 누구보다 열심히 가족을 생각하며 집안을 다시 세우고자 쉬는 날도 반납해가며 일을 하던 동생은 스물 아홉이라는 어린 나이에 과로라는 어울리지 않는 병명으로 어머니를 따라 먼저 갔습니다.
어머니와 동생을 잃은 아버지는 더 이상 버틸 힘도 남아있지 않으셨고, 아버지마저 쓰러지실까 저는 일을 하면서도 아버지에 대한 긴장을 놓을 수 없었습니다. 그래도 희망만은 버리지 않고 금강산이 다시 열리면 하고 싶다는 사업 아이디어도 생각하며 하루하루를 보내셨습니다.
그러나 속절없이 흐르는 시간은 그 희망마저도 아버지에게서 걷어갔습니다. 기다림이 독이 되어 아버지마저 뇌졸중으로 쓰러지시고 회복되기 힘든 몸으로 현재 입원해 계십니다.
저는 이제 기다림이 희망이라고 생각하지 않습니다.
희망을 담은 기다림이 저희 가족에게 어떤 영향을 주었는지 방금 여러분들은 들으셨습니다. 저는 제대로 된 매듭을 원하기에 이 자리에 섰습니다. 제가 여러분들 앞에서 저희 가족의 이야기를 하는 것은 이제 더 이상 기다릴 수 없기 때문입니다. 기다림을 매듭짓기 위해 여러분의 도움을 청하기 때문입니다. 그리고 올바른 판단과 하나님의 자비를 구합니다.
Witness 2) 'Mt. Geumgang' - Ms. Lee Sang Young, Daughter of a Worker at Mt. Geumgang Tourist Region
My family used to run a business called Changhee Foods in Mount Geumgang, and I am the daughter of Mr. Lee Changhee. Just like any other family, our family - my father, mother, sister and I – was a happy one. We were especially intimate with each other as we frequently helped out with the busy family business.
It was around the early 2000s when my parents started a business at Mt. Geumgang. People who have toured the Geumgang will probably remember a food truck along different tourist destinations which had “The Golden Carriage” painted in red on its side. My father drove this truck which left such a strong impression on many people who came across it. He intended for the truck to be memorable to people, and even some of the North Koreans took note of it.
Back then, it wasn’t very long since tourism first started in the area so the Mountain lacked many convenient stores. To be honest, there was only one convenience store at that time. My parents lived in a container home where it was scorching hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter, but they always gave their best effort. They took pride in being the first sole proprietorship to enter Mount Geumgang and worked as hard as other young workers. Their stories would appear in newspapers and television.
As tourism in the area became popular, our parents invested all their money and passion in their business under the strong conviction that they were working also for the country. They came south only when they had to and spent all their time up on the Mountain. Hard efforts paid off and with the money earned, for the first time in life, we went on family vacations and my sister and I were given the freedom to study what we wanted.
Just when everything seemed so perfect, things began to fall apart. The shooting incident of Park Wangja on July 11, 2008, halted any tourist activity in Mount Geumgang and my parents had to quickly leave the place with their whole life left behind.
As the days, weeks and years passed my parents grew more and more, weary. y parents who left to wait would always hover around the TV watching the morning and late evening news in hopes to find a newsflash about the Geumgang area. Such endless delays turned to anxiety and my parents began to fight quite often. Distress befell my parents and my mother who would write a diary to relieve her stress finally gave up and passed away on an especially cold day in March 2010.
Having lost his life partner, my dad lost all his vigor and energy. My sister and I decided to do anything we can to support the family. Encouraged by such motivations, my dad started a small business with what little money he had left. But because it started out with such a meager sum of money, the business faltered during hard times, and it did not get better.
In order to help the faltering business, my sister and I did what we can to earn money. We would work day and night and on the weekends too if possible. The memory of the food truck that our family left back at Geumgang would not let go of us and would haunt our family in whatever we did.
After three years of such hardship, my health started to deteriorate and I became ill. My sister worked extra hard to make up for what I couldn’t do. Such overwork led to my poor sister’s death when she was only 29.
My father lost all energy and confidence following my mother and my sister’s death and I could not relax for fear that my father too would give way. He, however, did not give up hope and endured the days thinking of what new business he might do if Geumgang would ever open its doors again.
Time however robbed even the little remains of hope my father had. Not able to withstand any further, my father suffered a stroke and is now at a hospital with no hope for recovery.
I no longer believe in waiting.
You have just heard what hopeful waiting has done to my family. I stand here today to find a solution because I could no longer wait anymore. I ask sincerely for your help in putting an end to all this waiting. And I also ask for the right judgments and God’s mercy.
