Rev. Jeff Ridges visited Korea this past November and held meetings with Rev. Kim, Young Ju General Secretary of the National Council of Churches in Korea and the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. World Mission Regional Liaison, Rev. Lim, Choon Sik.
Previously, Rev. Ridges spent 8 years serving in Korea as a PC(USA) co-worker with the Presbyterian Church of Korea (PCK) working with the Agriculture and Fishery Ministry Department. He currently serves as the Associate Director of the PC(USA) Outreach Foundation in Louisville, Kentucky. Through his service in Northeast Asia, he has maintained relationships with South Korea as well as China, visiting China at least twice a year on behalf of the Outreach Foundation.
He is currently interested in emphasizing relations with both China and North Korea.
Rev. Ridges especially wanted to meet with NCCK staff and Rev. Kim in order to talk more about the potential for reunification on the Korean peninsula. He is hoping to learn more about North Korea through the NCCK because he is interested in building a network between NCCK, Amity, and the Korean Christian Federation (KCF) of North Korea. During his time in Korea he also paid visits to Presbyterian University (Jangshin) and other professors with whom he once worked.
Patti Talbot, Program Coordinator for the United Church of Canada People in Partnership office, visited the NCCK at the end of October. She especially sat down with the International Relations Department, the Gender Equality Department, and the Reconciliation and Reunification Department to see how her office could work more closely with the projects of the NCCK. In addition to the peaceful reconciliation movement, she was particularly interested in connecting Canadian women theologians with the Korean Association of Women Theologians (KAWT), and also connecting the Canadian Church to those working with migrant worker communities, a current focus for the UCC.
The NCCK is interested in building up more relationships and networks with passionate Christians and denominations around the world. The conflict on the Korean peninsula involves more than just Koreans. Rather the conflict here relates to conflicts all around Northeast Asia and in fact around the world. If powers around the world could redeem their relationship to the conflict here, redeeming mistakes of the past, reconciliation here could provide hope for tension all around the world.

한국 그리스도교 신앙과 직제협의회(공동의장 김희중 대주교, 황용대 목사 / 이하 한국신앙과직제)에서는 2014년 12월 18일(목) 오후 7시 30분, 천주교 명동대성당에서 <2014 이웃과 함께하는 성탄음악회 “위로”>를 개최한다.
한국신앙직제는 “2014년은 유달리 크고 작은 사고가 우리 주변에 많이 일어났다. 그렇기에 우리가 기억하고 보듬어야할 이웃들도 그만큼 많아졌다. 많이 힘들고 아팠던 대한민국의 한 해, 하나님의 위로를 전하고자 2014 성탄음악회는 ‘위로’라는 작은 제목을 덧붙여서 진행하고자 한다.”고 밝혔다.
한국 그리스도교 일치의 차원에서 천주교와 개신교가 함께 2002년부터 진행해온 성탄음악회는 종교, 정치, 경제, 사회 등 각계 지도자와 일반, 소외계층 간의 대화를 통한 우리사회의 상생을 모색하고 사회ㆍ문화적 소외계층에 대한 사회 전체의 관심과 사랑을 증대시키는 데 목적을 두어 왔다.
음악회를 준비하고 있는 한국신앙과직제의 서범규 간사는 “그리스도의 탄생은 고단한 삶을 이어가는 이들을 향한 ‘하나님의 위로’입니다. 이 위로는 눈물이고 구원이며, 정의이고 평화이며 또한 해방이기도 합니다. 세월호 유가족, 밀양 주민들, 수많은 노동자, 이주민, 새터민 그리고 일상의 삶을 살아가는 사람들, 하나님께서 아끼고 보듬고 계신 모든 이들에게 하나님께서 보내주신 소망과 위로를 전하고자 합니다.”고 전했다.
금번 2014년 성탄음악회는 MBC 강재형 아나운서가 진행으로 다문화가정의 어린이들로 구성된 샬롬소년소녀합창단의 천사와도 같은 성탄축하송으로 막을 열고, 이웃과 함께하는 성탄음악회의 취지에 공감하는 뜻있는 음악인들의 공연이 이어진다. 특별히 한국전통문화로 성탄의 의미를 표현하고자 명창 김수미의 마태복음으로 구성된 판소리, 차다솜 양의 한국 춤사위, 그리고 우리 전통의 정가(正歌)와 서양 전통의 그레고리안 찬트가 어우러지는 색다른 시도가 이뤄진다.
세월호 유가족, 밀양의 주민들, 쌍용차해고노동자, 다문화가정, 새터민이 한 자리에 모임은 물론 힘차게 올 한해를 살아온 일상의 이웃들이 서로를 격려하고 자리가 되리라 기대한다. 자세한 일정은 아래와 같다.

Interfaith Clergy Soccer Tournament of 2014: A Prayer for Reconciliation and Peace
Clergy representing four religions gathered together and held a soccer tournament as a prayer for peace and reconciliation
The Jogye Order of Buddhism, the National Council of Church in Korea (NCCK), the Catholic Bishops Conference of Korea (CBCK), and the Center for Won Buddhism in Korea put together the “2014 Soccer Tournament of Clergy from Four Religions as Prayer for Reconciliation and Peace” on the 3rd of November at 9:30am at Jamsil Sports Complex.
On this day the soccer tournament proceeded with a system of Buddhists, Protestants, Catholics, and Won Buddhists separated into four teams following international friendly match rules with first and second halves of 20 minutes each.
Rev. Kim Young Ju stated, “I hope this becomes a time for your devotion to be expressed with your body as you all pray for reconciliation and peace. I hope this becomes a time to express your heart longing for reconciliation and peace through your body. I wish that the denominations’ experience of reconciling and creating peace might be a revival of the culture of life for society at large.”
Before the matches each religion took the time to commit the tournament to themes such as, “A Path to Heaven for the Victims of SEWOL” and “Fair Play.”
On this day, the new reformed church and Won Buddhism began the tournament with Won Buddhism winning the first match 1:0. The next match was Jogye Buddhism facing Catholic Church who were tied 1:1 at the end of regulation, but Jogye Buddhism went on to win in penalty shots 3:2. Jogye Buddhism went on to face Won Buddhism for the 1st place final, and Won Buddhism came out on top with a score of 2:0. Jogye Buddhism took 2nd place. The Catholic Church won 3rd place while the New Reformed Church settled for 4th place.
The tournament MVP award was given to monk Jidam, captain of the Jogye Buddhist team, and the participating religions donated the full prize to be used for good works in their head offices.

“He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8 NRSV)
Let us welcome the year 2015. I pray that the peace of the Lord will be with people who live in this generation in this world.
I hope this new year will be a year when all people can welcome hope. Jesus Christ became the hope for people in the lowest places on earth so that those who are weeping may be lifted up. In this moment I pray that this year becomes the year when the light of hope shines to those people in the lowest places who are now weeping.
Still the pain of the SEWOL ferry disaster has not healed. Investigation and identification, apology and penalty, and appropriate compensation must be fully achieved. I hope the families of the victims may begin to dry their tears. Founded on that reform, I hope that this society centered on profit will be transformed into a society centered on life.
This year must become the one when workers can begin with hope. I hope that all dismissed workers can return to work. I hope the anxiety of temporary workers is relieved. All workers must have self-esteem and pride, and we must create a social base where they can contribute to society.
Jesus said that the Sabbath was for the people, so declaring the world to be people-centered. I hope our society in 2015 becomes, not a society of ideological differences, but a world that sees people. Before the difference in our skin color, thoughts, and preference, I hope we all see people first. I hope that all minorities including sexual minorities can have opportunities to contribute to the society as dignified members of the community.
2015 is the 70th anniversary since liberation of the nation. We cannot defer the peace of the Korean peninsula any more. I hope that this year becomes the year to welcome a new turning point for reconciliation and peace of the nation. I hope that the conflict becomes reconciliation, hostility becomes harmony, and hatred becomes understanding.
I meditate on the words of the Micah, the prophet of God, from 3,000 years ago. “He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8 NRSV)
I would like to ask Christians, Let us make this a year to prioritize the practice of justice, return the grace, and carefully live with God. We as Christians have a calling to protect all the living things that are loved and cared for by God with our whole body, our mind and heart. May God’s grace be with all of those who will work toward this effort.

Brothers and sisters of the global church
I bring you all wishes for a deeply spiritual and liberating Christmas in this year of 2014. I want to bring my thanks to all our partners for their loving solidarity for the ecumenical movement in Korea. We in Korea experienced this so strongly at the WCC General Assembly last year, and rejoice in the WCC statement that came out of that Assembly that solidarity and cooperation is to be encouraged between Christians of North and South Korea, which will lead in time toward our Peninsula’s eventual reunification. This encouragement makes it possible for the NCCK to continue in its commitment.
In this season of the year, we regret the issues that we have not been able to solve. The suffering of the families of the victims of the Sewol Ferry and the temporary labourers who are treated so disrespectfully by employers is very intense, and NCCK is doing all it can for these issues.
Hopefully next year will see a substantial move forward in the questions around the relationship between North and South Korea 2015 is an important year – marking the 70th anniversary of the Korean Peninsula’s liberation from Japanese occupation. It is also the 130th year since the coming of Christian missionaries from America, the Methodist Henry Appenzeller and the Presbyterian Horace Underwood. We want to celebrate these special milestones in our life – always aware that total liberation will not be achieved until reunification.
There are a number of reasons why Korea has not been able to approach or achieve reunification. There are the conflicts between the superpowers which surround Korea, like the U.S. and China, and our self-reliance has been blocked by their interference since 1945. It is a major goal of NCCK that 2015 will achieve the first step of establishing a peace treaty, first by discussion of the 4 major parties of North and South Korea, the U.S. and China, and a lively exchange of a relationship between government, church, and civil society in both North and South Korea. Honest discussion and a treaty will mean that the May 4, 2010 declaration prohibiting all contact between South and North will have to be abolished.
As we think about reunification, we realize that a new society for Korea will have to respect human rights. We read in Scripture that first of all we are to love and respect one another as equals in the family of God. The government has reversed this, by saying that a society has to develop the economy first. With such a view, which leaves behind the week and vulnerable, the way was prepared for the great tragedy of the Sewol. We at NCCK are still demanding the full investigation into the Sewol situation, and continue to call for everyone’s voice to be heard. We look to this issue to be brought to a satisfactory conclusion in 2015, so that in the years ahead, our society will be more secure and more aware of the needs of our people.
As Jesus Christ comes to the earth and the light of the bright star of Bethlehem touches our hearts anew, we wish that the Good News of the Gospel will be yours.

- Annual Christmas afternoon Justice service

About a thousand people gathered at the Ansan Memorial Site for the joint Christmas worship at 3:30 p.m. This place chosen for this year’s worship as the organizers considered that at this Christmas time, traditionally a period of joy, the families of the victims of those drowned in the Sewol Ferry disaster are still in the depths of pain, and the citizens of the country grieve with them. This Memorial Site is an official memorial altar prepared since April 16 by the government as a place where people can come to remember and to honour, offer flowers or burn incense for the 250 high school students who drowned so tragically when the Sewol Ferry overturned in the waters off the south coast of Korea.
The title of the service was “Our Promise to Reveal the Truth”, and Rev. Bang In Song, pastor of Hamkae Yeounun Church preached on Psalm 85, ‘Raise Justice and Realize Peace’. Different churches and members of the ecumenical family took part in prayers, readings and music. A very meaningful part of the service was that 9 parents of the students shared as servers in the distribution of the communion bread and wine with the clergy, and later when the representative of the family committee, Jeon Myung Sun, one of the fathers, gave a testimony of the past several months for the suffering families.
A prepared statement was read, saying while we can’t forget the morning of April 16, even more sadness comes to us from the present attitude of government and social leaders, as they avoid the truth, refraining from taking responsibility and oppressing the request for the truth. In this Christmas time, remembering those who have died, we follow the Scriptural call to weep with those who weep. The commitments were made to remain with those who grieve, to continue to call for bringing out the truth, and to work to solve the social structural problem that led to the Sewol disaster, because this disaster is not only a one-time accident; it is a symptom of this society that values capital and power over human need and security.
Those gathered in the cold winter afternoon are looking to a happier New Year, as the government realizes their responsibility and a solution comes which will bring satisfaction to those in need, to bring about a society of hope, happiness and peace.

On Dec. 18, in the historic and beautiful Myeong-dong Cathedral in Seoul, an interfaith concert of Christmas music took place. It was conceived as a way for the faith community to bring comfort to those who are suffering at this Christmas time. Seoul Christians gathered with their neighbours to pray for those who grieve the loss of people through the Sewol Ferry tragedy, for the inhabitants of Milyang, for labourers and migrant workers, for the refugees from North Korea, and for members of the army who have faced trauma this year, as pointed out by the Military Human Rights Committee.
The Catholic Archbishop Kim Hee Jung and NCCK General Secretary Kim Young Ju, brought greetings to the gathering, and neighbourly well wishes were brought by leaders of the Buddhist, Cheondokyo, and Muslim communities in Seoul, Beop Hyeon, Jeonsuk Jeong and Huseyin Yigit.
The MC of the Concert was Kang Jae Hyung, the award-winning broadcaster of MBC, and a number of well-known artists offered their talents. The first act was the multicultural Shalom Boys and Girls Choir singing the French carol “Angels We Have Heard on High” and the Ukrainian “Carol of the Bells”, followed by beautiful seasonal song renditions by Soprano Lee Seon Rin, Tenor Yeon Song Wook, Baritone Jang Cheol and Soprano Kim Eun Young. The audience was treated to an emotional and descriptive dance by Cha Da Sum, and by a Pansori (traditional Korean) version of the Gospel Christmas story from Matthew. In addition, a chamber orchestra called Di Anima played the Bach Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B minor and the entertaining A Charlie Brown Christmas.
A highlight of the evening was the very lively intercultural group called Mong Ddang (All That Is) who sang The Circle of Life, a version of the Korean traditional Airang, and Felix Navidad, which really stimulated enthusiastic audience participation. The last presentation was a very beautiful rendition of Mary’s song, The Magnificat, by Jeong MaRi. She sang that powerful song in a Latin plainsong style and also in a traditional Korean Pansori style.
This was a significant celebration for the week leading up to Christmas, reminding us of the needs of our neighbours and the importance of the community of faith in serving the world.
The Myeongdong Cathedral will also hold the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity service taking place on Jan. 22, 2015.

- Annual Human Rights Award

On Dec. 9, Human Rights Day was celebrated by NCCK with its 28th annual Human Rights united worship and presentation of the Human Rights award.
The worship focused on the story of the Good Samaritan, with sermon preached by retired professor Kim Chang Nak. Reflections on the importance of the work of the Human Rights Centre and the support they give was shared by representatives of two groups assisted by NCCK’s Human Rights Centre during the past year, first by Mrs. Han Young on behalf of the wives of those from the United Progressive Party being held in prison on charges of conspiracy under the National Security Law, and then three workers from the protest lines representing labourers suffering violence from corporations, specifically Ssanyong Motors and CNN.
The recipient of this years’ Award was Im Tae Hoon, the director of the Military Human Rights Centre. Im Tae Hoon has a very interesting history. Information taken from Amnesty Report, March 2005 says that since 1997 Im was an activist seeking equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Korea. He also was vocal in seeking abolition of the draconian National Security Law in South Korea, campaigned against the governments AIDS policies and media propaganda, and lobbied for the establishment of the National Human Rights Commission. He led committees against internet censorship and discrimination against LGBT people, and leads an LGBT group at AI Korea. Im was arrested in February 2004 for refusing to serve in Korea’s mandatory military service. He was a conscientious objector, refusing to serve in the military due to his convictions of non-violence and peace.
Since that time, Im Tae Hoon has become director of a non-governmental agency, the Center for Military Human Rights in Korea. In this position, he works to uncover incidents within the Korean military which violate human rights.
A July, 2011 New York Times article reported that the Korean Defense Ministry had announced a crackdown on beatings and other abuses in the military and the eradication of a practice that many consider a bedrock of military life here but that has also been blamed for widespread brutality: the “order and obey” system, according to which soldiers and marines with seniority are encouraged to devise harsh penalties for their subordinates, and even beat them, in order to punish failure and enforce obedience to the smallest of rules and traditions.
However, abuses continue. In August, 2014, a BBC report says: “A military conscript's death in April has triggered outrage in South Korea following allegations that he was abused by fellow soldiers.
The army has said that Mr. Yoon, the 23-year-old conscript who died in April was struck in the chest by his colleagues while he was eating some snacks, This reportedly caused a piece of food to obstruct his airway and he died from asphyxiation.
However, the Center for Military Human Rights Korea disputed this account, saying Mr. Yoon was repeatedly beaten on the head by his sergeant and showed signs of concussion before losing consciousness.
Six soldiers have been arrested and four of them face manslaughter charges, but the Center is calling for the suspects to be charged with murder instead of manslaughter.
This death was followed by an incident in June where a conscript who had allegedly been bullied shot dead five colleagues.
The incident has triggered severe criticism of the military and widespread concern about conscript abuse. Military conscription is compulsory in South Korea.”
The Economist, reporting on the same incident in Sept., 2014 says, “In recent months reports have trickled out of South Korea’s barracks of beatings, humiliation and verbal abuse. News of a young conscript’s death surfaced in August.
The case has shocked South Koreans—as did an incident in 2011 when a badly bullied conscript went on a shooting rampage, killing four people; and another in 2005 when a soldier killed eight others with a grenade after being tormented by them.”
The Military Human Rights Center is trying to bring the military to a place of taking responsibility for violations that take place within its ranks and reform this inhuman system.
