Sewol Families Leaving MokpoNovember 17, 2017
"I wish you peace." The Korean Christian Church Council (Rev. Kim Young-ju) shared the pain of the family members of Sewol-cho, who decided to leave Mokpo New Port on November 18, after a long waiting period of 1,312 days. In a letter titled "I Will not forget the five who have not yet returned to the arms of the family."
The letter began with praying that God will comfort the family members who say they are leaving Mokpo New Port in order not to hurt the public. Saying,
"Nam Hyun-chul, Park Young-in, Yang Seung-jin, Kwon Jae-geun, Kwon Hyuk-gyu! I call out the five remaining names that have not yet returned to the arms of the family with pain and compassion.Where is the pain that is greater than the pain of losing a loved one? Is it possible to overcome the endless pain of sleepless night with regretting about the thing which they could not do for their loving one when they are alive? We cannot even imagine how great the sorrow is that they should go back to their broken everyday life with fail. Ask, only God for comfort. God, comfort them"
Secondly, the letter would ask forgiveness for the Korean Church's inability to get closer to the families of remaining loved ones missing and pledge not to let the devastation of the Sewol end in sorrow and despair for the families. Saying,
"We would like to express our sincere apology. We could not rush to your side when you tearfully tore your breasts in fear of not being able to find your family. We have not been able to fight fiercely against those who have been unwilling to provide the relief we desire with the excuse of having a limited budget. We have not been able to abate your grievances. We could not share your feelings enough when you had no choice but envy other families who found mortal remains. We stood apart from your deep anxious of 1,312 nights without comfortable sleep We looked at the yellow ribbon on our chests and comforted ourselves, not you. Please forgive us for this."
Finally, the letter offers a resolution to never forget the five members who have not yet returned to the family's welfare. Saying,
"Beloved Expectant Families, the Korean Church will never forget the five who have yet to return to their families. We will remember the five who have not yet returned to their families in our hearts forever. We pray from the bottom of our heart that all five of them will be able to return to their families and enjoy eternal rest. We promise to achieve our best to have investigation for the facts without any doubt, and a system for a safe society will be quickly established to make 304 noble souls live and breathe in the safe lives of all the people. We believe this is the only way to remember and memorialize the 304 victims of the Sewol disaster.
The final words of the letter Rev. Dr. Kim Young-ju writes, "Be healthy. We pray that God's comfort and peace will always be with the beloved family in their hearts as they return to everyday life."
