A prayer meeting for peace between Palestine and Israel was held by the International Committee and KCNPP (Korean Christian Network for Peace in Palestine) with many peace activists attending in Saint John Chapel at the Seoul Cathedral of the Anglican Church on the 27th of May 2014.

The prayer was prepared not only to remember the suffering of the Palestinians who have lost their lives, families and jobs, but also to inspire the interest for peace and justice in North-East Asia and the Korean Peninsula.

The prayer meeting was hosted by Rev. Si-gyung Yoo (Anglican Church, NCCK International member), accompanied by prayers, songs and testimonies.

Mr. Sunkyo Park, who had participated in the WCC Ecumenical Accompaniment Program in Palestine and Israel, said: “Palestinians are being watched all the time and their movement rights are restricted due to the separation barrier built by Israel. This restriction of their movement rights leads to economical difficulties and they suffer from the hardships of life. I think that Korean Churches have a dichotomous way of thinking due to our divided country. So, they do exactly the same with the Palestine issue: look at it with a dichotomous way of thinking.” He asked people to approach this issue and situation without prejudice.

Ms. Yunhee Lee, Secretary-General of YMCA Korea emphasized that praying for Palestine and making efforts to solve the problems is also a fact for the renewal of Korean Churches. She said: “There are many common things between Palestine and Korea in the history of suffering. In terms of solidarity with the weak, and not making peace with power, the issues of Palestine have to go together with the Korean Church Movement.”

Prayers for peace in Palestine, for women and children in prison, for peace in the Middle East and the Korean Peninsula were lifted and Professor Whan-Jin Lee sang two Hebrew songs of longing for peace.

The NCCK International Committee and KCNPP will hold prayer and theological seminars 5 times starting from June this year until the World Week for Peace in Palestine Israel 2014, September 21-27, to connect the peace of Palestine and the Korean Peninsula. They also run enterprises, such as Book Project Support for young prisoners and Alternative Pilgrimage.
