Report on the evaluation meeting
of the WCC assembly in Busan.
On April 11th, an evaluation meeting was held at the NCCK building regarding the WCC 10th General Assembly which was held in Busan last year.
The purpose of the meeting was to evaluate the preparation process, the events that took place during the assembly and to consolidate the tasks, operations and cooperation methods between the Korean Church and the international ecumenical movements.
Rev. Kim Jong-Gu(International committee, NCCK) presented a report on a critical study of native and international ecumenical movements. In his report he suggested to establish a peace community in north-east Asia. He said: “At this time starting with the EU, the whole world has fulfilled or is trying to find a way to a peaceful conversion of local communities while only in north-east Asia are such strained relations still located.” He emphasized that constructing enduring peace order in north-east Asia is the most important contribution that the Korean Church and the ecumenical movement have to afford for the modern world.
Professor Bae Hyun-Joo (Busan Presbyterian University, WCC Central Committee member) presented a discussion paper on the theme: Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace. “We cannot deny there were negative aspects about the WCC assembly in Busan, but we received many comments of appreciation that it put new energy into the WCC. If we can base our actions on the lessons we received from this Assembly, the Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace of the Korean Church can give power and inspiration to the worldwide churches.”
After reports and presentations, the participants were divided into small groups and had the opportunity to share their thoughts in discussions about the projects which were lifted by the presenters.
