30 years of Gender Equality Work
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Gender Equality Committee, established in 1982 as a integral part of NCCK, the Committee oversaw the publication of a history book recording the activities and achievements of this group through the 30 years. On April 2, 2014, a book launch celebration for 30 years of Christian Women’s Movement was held at the NCCK building.
Chairperson of the Gender Equality Committee, Rev. Kim Hye Sook welcomed those attending with the words,“This 30 year period was not only a time when women, who had to keep silent, started to raise their voices, but also where God’s order of creation was renewed. I hope that this book will share knowledge and give people the opportunity to feel God’s love.”
This book had three authors. Rev. Han Kuk-Yeom, Chairperson of the Women Migrants Human Rights Center, wrote the first part - from the establishment of the standing committee in 1982 until 1990. Rev. Lee Moon-Sook, General Secretary of Asian Church Women’s Comference, took on the second part covering 1991 till 2000, and the last decade, 2001 until 2012, was prepared by Ms Jung Hae-Sun, Director of NCCK Gender Equal Committee.
This record is an invaluable document, because this history, hidden in the patriarchal church culture, now is recorded by those who took part in the actions and activities and dreams of the Women’s Movement through these significant years.
General Secretary Rev. Dr. Kim Young Ju brought a congratulatory message, in which he noted that women’s status in church and society is improving, and yet many women are still abused and prevented from reaching their full potential. He said, “I hope that this gathering will become the beginning of a new women’s movement and I look forward to a female NCCK General Secretary in the near future.”
