예배는 장윤재 목사(이화여대 교수)의 사회, 송영자 장로(국제위 부위원장)의 기도, 이원규 목사(감신대 교수, 신학연구위원장)의 설교, 인명진 목사(국제위원장)의 축도 순으로 진행되었다. 또한 갈릴리 교회내 외국인 공동체인 인도네시아교회의 특송과 몽골교회의 헌금송 순서도 있었다.
아시아 주일(Aisa Sunday)은 1959년 5월 24일 아시아기독교협의회(CCA)가 생기게 된 것을 기념하는 날이다. 해마다 특별히 중요한 사안이나, 곤경에 처한 회원교회에 초점을 맞추어 이 주일을 지키게 된다.
특별히 올해는 네팔을 위해 기도했다. 네팔의 그리스도인들이 진정한 그리스도인이 되고, 다른 종교공동체 사람들과 화해와 평화의 분위기를 조성하며, 인권과 사회정의가 실현되는 사회가 되기를 위해 함께 기도했다.

The Stages of Faith

Mark 10: 46-52
"Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus, was sitting by the roadside begging. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" Jesus stopped and said, "Call him." So they called to the blind man, "Cheer up! On your feet! He's calling you. Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus. "What do you want me to do for you?" Jesus asked him. The blind man said, "Rabbi, I want to see." "Go," said Jesus, "your faith has healed you." Immediately he received his sight and followed jesus along the road.
The Bible text we read was about the story of a blind beggar who was healed by Jesus. The story is as following: One day Jesus and his disciples were moving from the city of Jericho. Hearing that Jesus was passing by, a blind man shouted and begged Jesus to help him. Jesus called the blind man and asked him. "What do you want me to do for you?" The blind man said, "I want to see." Then Jesus healed the blind man and he received his sight.
Here we can learn many lessons from the faith of the blind man. We can learn what the true faith should be. Also we find some stages of faith from the story of the blind man.
First, we should learn from the blind man his eagerness. Faith is eagerness. The blind man might well know about Jesus. He might think Jesus had a power of healing. He might believe Jesus could solve his problem. So, the blind man shouted, "Jesus, have mercy on me!" Many people rebuked him and told him to be quiet. But the blind man did not give up. Rather he shouted all the more. "Son of David, have mercy on me!" He was very serious and earnest. Faith is like this. The first stage of faith is eagerness.
We are all weak persons. We have a lot of problems in our lives. We may have some economic problem, health problem, family problem, and/or mental problem. Sometimes we feel isolated, disregarded, disgraced, and/or discriminated. At other times, we feel pain. We feel sorry. We feel sad. We feel lonely. When times get rough, when things get hard, what can we do? To whom can we depend on? Where can we get some help?
We should depend on Jesus. We can get help from Jesus. But there is a condition. We should ask him eagerly. Even though we ask Jesus something, nothing might be happened. Then ask Jesus again and again just like the blind man. Shout all the more, "Jesus, have mercy on me!"
Let's see the parable of the persistent widow shown in Luke 18: 1-8. The story is as following:
"In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared about men. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, 'Grant me justice against my adversary.' For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, 'Even though I don't fear God or care about men, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won't eventually wear me out with her coming!" And the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly."
What does this story mean? When people ask God eagerly, God will listen. So will Jesus. Do you want something to be done? Do you want something to be happened? Do you want something to be achieved? Pray to God. Ask Jesus. Ask Jesus again and again. Ask Jesus with all your heart. Never give up. Then Jesus will care of your need and solve your problem.
When the blind man eagerly asked Jesus to have mercy on him, Jesus stopped and said, "call him." Same way if we seek Jesus, he will respond. He will say, "Come to me." Jesus always listen to us when we ask him seriously.
Jesus called the blind man. Then the blind man threw his cloak aside, jumped to his feet, and came to Jesus. This is the second stage of faith. Just as the blind man, we should immediately rush to Jesus when he calls us. Faith is not hesitation. We should not hesitate for his calling. But not a few people hesitate going to Jesus. Why? Sometimes that's because they do not trust Jesus. At other times that's because they do not want to move or to change.
But what did the blind man do when Jesus called him to come. He jumped to his feet and came to Jesus. He responded right away. Faith is immediate response to Jesus. The blind man even threw his cloak aside. His cloak might be the only property the blind beggar had. But he threw it aside. Why? Because he had to hurry to go to Jesus. And because the cloak was not important any more to get mercy from Jesus.
What shall we do when Jesus calls us to come to him? We should rush to Jesus leaving everything aside. When Jesus calls us, we should not cling to worldly things. If we really want to go to Jesus, we should leave our money, power, glory behind. The story of a young and rich man shows the same lesson (Matthew 19: 16-22). One day a man came to Jesus and asked him the way of getting eternal life. Jesus answered, "Go, sell your possessions and give them to the poor." When the young heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.
So often the things we possess such as wealth, honor, and status can be a barrier to get mercy of Jesus.
When the blind man came to Jesus, Jesus asked him, "What do you want me to do for you?" The blind man said, "I want to see." What a perfect answer it was! That was the correct answer. It was the right answer. This is the third stage of faith. Faith is to ask Jesus the right thing.
What is the most important thing for the blind man? Money? Job? House? Food? Clothes? These may be necessary. But the most important thing is to be able to see. When Jesus asked the blind man, "what do you want?", he did not answer like these, "Please make me rich, make me famous." To see is the most valuable thing for the blind man. So he said, "I want to see." This was the best answer.
Same thing can be happened to us. If we beg Jesus to do us a favor, he will ask us, "What do you want me to do for you?" We can answer in these ways, "I want more money. I want a better job. I want a good health. I want promotion. I want security. I want a good luck. And so on." Not bad. But this kind of asking is nothing to do with faith. And that is not the best answer. What will be the right answer for us? As for the question, "what do you want me to do for you?", how about these answers? "I want to love my neighbors." "I want to console the person filled with sorrow." "I want to encourage the person with despair." "I want to feed hungry persons." "I want to be a friend of lonely persons." "I want to give hope to depressed persons." "I want to care for the sick." "I want to help the handicapped ." "I want to share my money, time, and energy with needed persons."
When Jesus recovered the blind man's sight, Jesus said, "Your faith has healed you." What does it mean? To ask right thing is the very good expression of faith. We should also ask Jesus right thing. What is the right thing? That is to love, do justice, and make peace. If we have right sight, we are able to see how many people are in distress and trouble. We are able to see how many people need for love. We are able to see how many people are hungry and thirsty. We are able to see how many people are sick and lonely. We are able to see how many people are tired from work. We are able to see how many people are discriminated in terms of race, sex, age, class, and so on.
After the blind man received his sight, what did he do? He followed Jesus. This is the final stage of faith. Faith is to follow Jesus. What does it mean to follow Jesus? We call a person who follows Jesus, a Christian. The Christian means the person of Christ. A famous theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer said that to be a Christian means to be a Christ. In this sense, a Christian is a little Jesus. The Christian is the person who tries to imitate Jesus, who follows the way of life of Jesus, who sacrifice himself to other people, who gives everything to the needed persons.
If Jesus solve our problems, and if Jesus makes us to see the right thing, What shall we do? First of all, we should really thank Jesus. Next, we should follow Jesus as did the blind man long time ago. To follow Jesus is to imitate the life of Jesus. However, it is not easy to follow Jesus. Because it requires self-sacrifice, commitment, endurance, and faithfulness. Nevertheless, we have to be loyal to Jesus since he made us see the truth of love, justice, and peace.
We are weak persons. We need the help of Jesus. So we ask Jesus to help us. When we ask Jesus to have mercy on us, he tells us to come. When Jesus calls us, we should rush to Jesus immediately and leaving everything behind. And When Jesus said to us, "What you want me to do for you?", what shall be our answer? It should be that "I want to be a real Christian. I want to imitate Jesus. I want to become a person who can love, do justice, and make peace." May God bless each of you to become a little Jesus who can make this world the kingdom of God full of love, justice, and peace. Amen.

예수와 제자들이 예리고에 들렀다가 다시 길을 떠날 때에 많은 사람들이 따라가고 있었다. 그 때 티매오의 아들 바르티매오라는 앞 못 보는 거지가 길가에 앉아 있다가 나자렛 예수라는 소리를 듣고 "다윗의 자손이신 예수님, 저에게 자비를 베풀어주십시오!" 하고 외쳤다. 여러 사람이 조용히 하라고 꾸짖었으나 그는 더욱 큰소리로 "다윗의 자손이시여, 저에게 자비를 베풀어주십시오!" 하고 소리질렀다. 예수께서 걸음을 멈추시고 "그를 불러오너라." 하셨다. 그들이 소경을 부르며 "용기를 내어 일어서라. 그분이 너를 부르신다." 하고 일러주자 소경은 겉옷을 벗어버리고 벌떡 일어나 예수께 다가왔다. 예수께서 "나에게 바라는 것이 무엇이냐?" 하고 물으시자 그는 "선생님, 제 눈을 뜨게 해주십시오." 하였다. "가라. 네 믿음이 너를 살렸다." 예수의 말씀이 떨어지자 곧 소경은 눈을 뜨고 예수를 따라나섰다.
우리가 읽은 성경 본문은 예수님께 고침 받은 거지소경에 대한 이야기입니다. 이 말씀은 아래와 같습니다. 어느 날 예수님과 그 제자들이 여리고로 이동하고 있었습니다. 예수님께서 지나가고 계시다는 소식을 들은 한 소경 남자가 예수님께 자신을 도와 달라고 소리치며 애원했습니다. 예수께서는 그 소경을 부르시고 물으셨다. "내게 바라는 것이 무엇이냐?" 소경은 대답했습니다. "보기를 원합니다." 그때 예수님께서는 그 소경을 고쳐주셨고, 그는 보게 되었다는 이야기입니다.
우리는 이 소경 남자의 신앙을 통해 많은 교훈을 배울 수 있습니다. 우리는 진실한 신앙은 어떠해야 하며, 신앙에는 어떤 단계들이 있는지를 배우게 됩니다.
첫째, 그의 열심을 배워야 합니다. 신앙은 열심입니다. 그 소경은 예수님에 대해 잘 알고 있었을 것입니다. 예수님은 치유의 능력을 가지신 분으로 생각하고 있었습니다. 그는 예수님이야말로 자신의 문제를 해결해 주실 분으로 믿었습니다. 그래서 소리쳤습니다. "예수님 저에게 자비를 베풀어 주십시오." 많은 사람들이 조용히 하라고 꾸짖었습니다. 그래도 그 소경은 포기하지 않았습니다. 오히려 더 크게 소리쳤습니다. "다윗의 자손이시여, 저에게 자비를 베풀어 주소서!". 그는 매우 진지했고 열심이었습니다. 신앙이란 이런 것입니다. 신앙의 첫 단계는 열심인 것입니다.
우리는 모두가 약한 사람들입니다. 우리는 우리 삶에서 많은 문제들을 가지고 있습니다. 경제적 문제, 건강문제, 가족문제, 정신적 문제 등 수 많은 문제들에 놓여 있습니다. 때때로 우리는 소외되고, 무시되고, 수치를 당하고, 차별을 당합니다. 또한 고통과 섭섭함, 슬픔과 외로움을 느낍니다. 험난하고 어려운 일을 당했을 때, 우리가 무엇을 할 수 있고, 누구를 의지해야 합니까? 어디에서 도움을 얻을 수 있습니까?
우리는 예수님을 의지해야 합니다. 예수님으로 부터의 도움을 얻어야 합니다. 그러나 조건이 있습니다. 열심히 그분께 호소해야 하는 것입니다. 비록 아무런 변화가 없다 할지라도, 이 소경과 같이 계속해서 예수님께 간청해야 하는 것입니다. 더욱 큰 소리로 "저에게 자비를 베풀어 주십시오"라고 소리쳐야 하는 것입니다.
누가복음 18:1~8의 끈질긴 과부의 비유를 보십시오. 이 말씀은 아래와 같습니다.

"어떤 도시에 하느님을 두려워하지 않고 사람도 거들떠보지 않는 재판관이 있었다. 그 도시에는 어떤 과부가 있었는데 그 여자는 늘 그를 찾아가서 '저에게 억울한 일을 한 사람이 있습니다. 올바른 판결을 내려주십시오.' 하고 졸라댔다. 오랫동안 그 여자의 청을 들어주지 않던 재판관도 결국 '나는 하느님도 두려워하지 않고 사람도 거들떠보지 않는 사람이지만 이 과부가 너무도 성가시게 구니 그 소원대로 판결해 주어야지. 그렇게 하지 않으면 자꾸만 찾아와서 못 견디게 굴 것이 아닌가.' 하는 생각을 하게 되었다." 주님께서는 계속해서 말씀하셨다. "이 고약한 재판관의 말을 새겨들어라. 하느님께서 택하신 백성이 밤낮 부르짖는데도 올바르게 판결해 주지 않으시고 오랫동안 그대로 내버려두실 것 같으냐? 사실 하느님께서는 그들에게 지체 없이 올바른 판결을 내려주실 것이다."
이 말씀이 의미하는 것이 무엇입니까? 우리가 하나님께 열심히 간구할 때, 하나님께서는 들으십니다. 예수님께서도 들으십니다. 어떤 것을 해주시기를 원하십니까? 어떤 일이 일어나기를 원하십니까? 그 일이 성취되기를 원하십니까? 하나님께 기도하십시오. 예수님께 간구하십시오. 계속해서 간구하십시오. 온 마음으로 간구하십시오. 결코 포기하지 마십시오. 그러면 예수님께서는 여러분의 요구를 들어주실 것이고, 여러분의 문제를 해결해 주실 것입니다.
소경이 예수님께 자신에게 자비를 베풀어 주실 것을 열심으로 간구했을 때, 예수님께서는 걸음을 멈추시고 말씀하셨습니다. "그를 불러 오너라." 같은 방식으로 우리가 예수님께 간구할 때, 그분은 응답하실 것입니다. "나에게 오너라." 예수님께서는 우리가 진심으로 간구할 때 언제나 들어주십니다.
예수님께서 소경을 부르셨습니다. 그때 그 소경은 자신의 겉옷을 던져버리고, 벌떡 일어나 예수님께 달려갔습니다. 이것이 신앙의 두 번째 단계입니다. 바로 그 소경처럼 우리는 그 분이 우리를 부르실 때 즉각적으로 달려가야 합니다. 신앙은 주저함이 아닙니다. 우리는 그분의 부르심에 주저하지 말아야 합니다. 그러나 소수의 사람들만이 그렇게 합니다. 왜 그렇습니까? 때때로 사람들은 예수님을 신뢰하지 못합니다. 또는 움직이거나 변화하는 것을 원치 않기 때문입니다.
그러나 예수님께서 부르셨을 때 소경은 어떻게 했습니까? 벌떡 일어나 예수께로 갔습니다. 그는 곧바로 응답했습니다. 신앙이란 예수님께 즉각적으로 응답하는 것입니다. 소경이 자신의 겉옷을 벗어 던진 것처럼 말입니다. 그의 겉옷은 소경 거지에게는 유일한 재산이었을 것입니다. 그러나 그는 그것을 던져버립니다. 이유가 무엇입니까? 예수님께 빨리 달려가기 위해서입니다. 겉옷은 예수님의 자비를 얻는 것보다 중요하지 않았기 때문입니다.

"가서 네 소유를 팔아, 가난한 사람들에게 주어라." 이 말씀을 들은 젊은이는 슬퍼하며 갔습니다. 왜냐하면 그는 굉장한 부자였기 때문입니다.
이와 같이 종종 우리는 우리가 소유한 부, 명예, 지위 같은 것들 때문에 예수님의 자비를 얻는데 장해가 될 수 있습니다.
소경이 예수님께 왔을 때, 예수님께서는 말씀하셨습니다. "나에게 바라는 것이 무엇이냐?" 소경은 말했습니다. "보기를 원합니다." 얼마나 완벽한 대답입니까! 정확한 답변이고 올바른 대답이었습니다. 이것이 신앙의 세 번째 단계입니다. 신앙이란 예수님께 올바른것을 요구하는 것입니다.
소경에게 가장 중요한 것이 무엇이겠습니까? 돈입니까? 일입니까? 집입니까? 음식입니까? 의복입니까? 이것들 모두는 필요한 것들일 것입니다. 그러나 가장 중요한 것은 볼 수 있게 되는 것입니다. 예수님께서 소경에게 "무엇을 원하느냐"고 물었을 때, 그는 이런 것들을 대답하지 않았습니다. "나를 부자로 만들어 주십시오, 나를 유명하게 해 주십시오" 소경에게는 보는 것이 가장 가치 있는 것이었습니다. 그래서 그는 "저는 보기를 원합니다."라고 대답했고, 이것이 가장 좋은 대답이었던 것입니다.
같은 일이 우리에게도 일어날 수 있습니다. 우리가 예수님께 우리의 소원을 구할 때, 그분은 우리들에게 물으실 것입니다. "너희가 나에게 바라는 것이 무엇이냐?" 우리는 이런 대답들을 할 수 있습니다. "더 많은 돈을 원합니다. 좋은 일자리를 원합니다. 건강을 원합니다. 진급을 원합니다. 안정을 원합니다. 행운을 원합니다." 등등. 이런 요구들이 나쁜 것은 아닙니다. 그러나 신앙의 행위는 아닙니다. 그리고 예수님의 질문에 대한 가장 좋은 대답도 아닌 것입니다. 올바른 대답은 어떤 것일까요? "너희가 나에게 바라는 것이 무엇이냐?"는 질문에 대해 이런 대답은 어떻습니까? "이웃을 사랑하기 원합니다." "슬픔에 차있는 사람을 위로하기 원합니다." "절망에 빠져있는 사람을 격려하고 싶습니다." "굶주린 사람들을 도와주고 싶습니다." "외로운 사람들의 친구가 되고 싶습니다." "실망한 사람들에게 희망을 주고 싶습니다." "아픈 사람을 돌봐주고 싶습니다." "장애인들을 도와주고 싶습니다." 나의 재물과 시간과 에너지를 필요한 사람들에게 나누어 주고 싶습니다."
예수님께서는 소경의 눈을 고쳐 주셨을 때, "너의 믿음이 너를 고쳤다."고 말씀하셨습니다. 이 말이 무슨 뜻입니까? 올바른 것을 요구하는 것은 신앙의 매우 좋은 표현인 것입니다. 우리는 예수님께 올바르게 간구해야 합니다. 올바른 것이 무엇입니까? 그것은 사랑하고, 정의를 행하며, 평화를 이루기를 구하는 것입니다. 만약 우리의 시야가 밝아진다면 우리는 얼마나 많은 사람들이 고뇌와 고통 속에 있는지 알게 될 것입니다. 얼마나 많은 사람들이 사랑을 갈망하는지 알게 될 것입니다. 얼마나 많은 사람들이 굶주림과 목마름 속에 있는지 알게 될 것입니다. 얼마나 많은 사람들이 병들어 있고 외로워하는지 알게 될 것입니다. 얼마나 많은 사람들이 실직당하고 있는지 알게 될 것입니다. 얼마나 많은 사람들이 인종, 성, 나이, 계급 등으로 차별당하고 있는지 알게 될 것입니다.
소경은 시야가 밝아진 후에 무엇을 했습니까? 그는 예수님을 따랐습니다. 이것이 신앙의 마지막 단계인 것입니다. 신앙은 예수님을 따르는 것입니다. 예수님을 따른다는 것은 무엇입니까? 우리 크리스챤들은 예수님을 따르는 사람으로 불림 받은 것입니다. 크리스챤은 그리스도의 사람을 의미합니다. 유명한 신학자인 디트리히트 본회퍼는 크리스챤이 된다는 것은 그리스도가 되는 것을 의미한다고 말했습니다. 이런 의미에서 크리스챤은 작은 예수인 것입니다. 크리스챤은 예수님을 본받는 사람이고, 예수님의 삶의 방식을 따르는 사람이며, 다른 사람을 위해 자신을 희생하는 사람이며, 필요로 하는 사람들에게 모든 것을 주는 사람입니다.
만약 예수님께서 우리의 문제를 해결해 주시고, 올바른 것을 볼 수 있게 해 주신다면, 우리는 무엇을 해야 합니까? 먼저 우리는 예수님께 진실한 감사를 드려야 합니다. 그리고는 오래전 그 소경이 했던 것처럼 예수님을 따라야 합니다. 예수님을 따르는 것은 예수님의 삶을 본받는 것입니다. 그러나 예수님을 따른다는 것은 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 왜냐하면 그것은 자기희생, 헌신, 인내, 신실함을 요구하기 때문입니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 우리는 예수님께 신실해져야 합니다. 그분은 우리가 사랑과 정의 평화의 진실을 알 수 있게 해주셨기 때문입니다.
