한국기독교교회협의회 백도웅 총무는 미국그리스도교회협의회(NCCC-USA) 밥 에드거 총무에게 다음과 같은 서신을 보내고 한반도에 어떠한 형태의 군사적 행동이나 전쟁행위가 재발되어서는 안되며, 6자회담 뿐만 아니라, 북미간의 대화가 재개되어야 함을 강조하였다. 또한 이를 위해 한국교회와 미국교회가 함께 기도하고 협력하기를 바라는 서신을 보냈다. 서신의 전문은 아래와 같다.

주님의 평화로 문안드립니다.
항상 평화와 화해를 위해 기도하고, 노력하시는 미국그리스도교회협의회의 노고에 감사드립니다. 평화와 화해는 하나님께서 주신 귀한 선물이며, 함께 이루어 가야할 중요한 과제이기도 합니다.
미국교회와 한국교회는 한반도에서 평화와 화해를 위해 함께 기도하고, 노력해 왔습니다. 그러나 한반도에는 반세기 이상 적대관계가 계속되고 있습니다. 특히 현재 우리는 북·미간의 여러 갈등상황을 안타깝게 생각합니다. 어떤 일이 있어도 평화와 화해를 위해 노력해야 할 우리의 믿음을 재확인하면서 이러한 우리의 뜻을 미국교회와 함께 나누고 싶습니다.
우리는 한반도에서 어떠한 형태의 전쟁행위, 군사도발행위가 있어서는 안 된다는 점을 분명히 합니다. 우리는 전쟁을 원치 않으며, 한반도에서 평화를 저해하는 어떠한 행위도 용납할 수 없음이 우리의 굳은 의지입니다.
그런 면에서 한반도 평화를 위한 6자 회담도 계속되어야 하고, 아울러 북·미간의 다양한 대화와 접촉이 있어야 함을 강조하고 싶습니다. 우리는 반세기 이상 계속된 적대관계 해소가 결코 쉬운 일이 아니라고 생각하기 때문에 평화와 화해를 만들어 가는 과정에서 상대방을 존중하고, 이해하는 태도가 무엇보다 필요하다고 생각합니다. 평화와 화해의 분위기를 해치는 필요 없는 말과 행동 때문에 만남과 대화 자체가 방해받아서는 안 됩니다.
조속한 시일 내에 6자 회담뿐만 아니라, 북·미간에도 대화가 재개되어 한반도를 비롯한 동북아 평화와 안정이 이루어지기를 바라면서 총무님과 미국그리스도교회협의회가 기도하고, 협력해 주시기를 바랍니다.

Dear Rev. Dr. Bob Edgar,
Greetings in the name of our Lord of peace,
We appreciate the NCCC-USA's constant efforts for peace and reconciliation in the Korean peninsula and other regions in the world. We confess that peace and reconciliation are a gift given by God to his people and at the same time, a duty God's people have to fulfill together.
Churches in Korea and the US have prayed and worked together for peace and reconciliation of the Korean peninsula but the confrontation between the two Koreas continues. We are especially concerned about the conflict between North Korea and the US. We reaffirm our duty to make efforts for bringing peace and reconciliation to the Korean peninsula and want to share our confession with churches in the US.
We make it clear here that any kind of war or military strike must not be allowed to happen in the Korean peninsula. We do not want war and cannot allow any kind of action that will obstruct peace.
We emphasize here that the six-party talks must be continued and at the same time, there must be dialogues and contacts between North Korea and the US in a variety of ways. We know that the settlement of confrontation and hostility that have continued for more than half a century is not easy at all. Both parties, therefore, must endeavor to respect and understand each other in the process of working for peace and reconciliation. Dialogues and meetings must not be obstructed by imprudent words and behaviors.
We hope that the six-party talks be resumed immediately and peace and stability in the Korean peninsula and Northeast Asia be achieved. We ask for cooperation and prayers of churches in the US as well as the NCCC-USA.
